Is there a way to find out my Windows serial key?

Hi,

I'm at a friends place and she doesn't have her Windows XP Home CD or remember her key and we need to reinstall everything - long story. Is there a way I can check on the computer for the key so I can use my Windows CD and her key? That should be legal, yes?

Is there a program or something that will search her computer for the key or other serial keys for things we need to reinstall?

No legal issues as she had XP installed before and all that you are doing is searching for the key that was used.

It should be legal. She has a legal copy of XP and a legal key, we just don't have her CD. Using my CD should be fine cuz' it's a legal key. I hope.

Your CD will only work if all relevent "version" factors match- Home versus pro, Upgrade vs full, maybe even SP level. Worth a try, though, just FYI.

I'm not sure the exact process, but if the computer still boots, and you can view the PID (right-click and properties on "my computer"),you may also be able to get a new key and/or CD by calling up MS and reading them that number. Alot of people probably call up and demand new keys with a BS story, though, so there will be hoops and possibly replacement charges involved, if anything can even be done at all.

Thanks everyone for your help. I still haven't tried reinstalling the OS yet, but I did get the seriel number.

It didn't give me her Office 2000 key though. Bah! She doesn't have the CD for Office 2000 either.

She doesn't have the CD's because she's not with her boyfiend anymore and he took them all and left the computer. Just in case you out there were wondering.

Should I try the Open Sourced Office program? As you can see I'm trying to keep it all legal like the good geek that I am.

Is Open Office just as good as the overpriced MS Office?
