I just flashed my BIOS (ABIT TH711 motherboard w/ 1.8GHz P4) and now get an alarm when I boot up. I think it is a CPU fan speed alarm because the speed reads "0 rpm" in my PC health status. I can look at the fan and see that it is running. I cannot find any setting that will allow me to change the speed. My CPU temp is fine and the computer runs normally, except for that alarm. It does not stop. Any ideas how I can get it to recognize the CPU fan speed? Or ideas of how to interpret the alarm?

make sure your fan is connected directly into the 3-pin directly on the motherboard. there should also be a setting in the BIOS settings to disable to alarm. It measures the fan speed by one of the wires on the 3-pin connector. Basically, a signal sent after every revolution of the fan down this one wire.

Which Bios update version did you use, was it the latest and did you get it from Abit themselfs or some other website? ( post link to place of download if possible )

was there a reason you needed to flash the bios, if so what was it?

Do you have any error codes on the motherboards error/post code LED display?

could try reseting the Bios back to default settings, but as Josh said you should be able to turn the alarm of in the Bios in the Power Management section.

I used the latest BIOS and got it from ABIT. I flashed it because I want to add a larger hard drive that my old BIOS would not support. The error code "FF" is dispalyed on the motherboard when the alarm sounds, but I do not know what that means. I do not see any option of turning the alarm off in my BIOS.

As far as I know, the FF means it started up normally. It's not an error code. Here is a beep code list for Abit boards:

No beep at all - this means your motherboard is dead, either due to a
defective or underpowered power supply, poorly seated CPU or RAM, or a
    dead-on-arrival board

One beep - board is working fine

One long beep then machine shuts down - faulty, improperly installed or
    missing CPU

1 short (Beep) System booting is normally

2 short (Beep) CMOS setting error

1 long - 1 short (Beep) DRAM ERROR

1 long - 2 short (Beep) Display card or monitor connected error

1 long - 3 short (Beep) Keyboard Error

1 long - 9 short (Beep) ROM Error

Long (Beep) continuous - DRAM isn't inserted correctly

Short (Beep) continuous - POWER supply has a problem

A two-tone siren - generally caused by overheating or out of specification
    voltages

Four beeps then machine shuts down - this is because this version of the Bios will shut down your machine if no fan tachometer signal is detected on
the fan header. Make sure you attach a fan to the FAN1 or FAN4 header or
clear CMOS to reset to default (no checking).

If it's a continuous long beep...I'd have another look at that ram. Test it, try to reseat it, etc.

I am getting the 2 tone siren. I think it is because it is reading my CPU fan speed as zero even though the fan is running properly. Any ideas of how to get it to recognize the fan speed?

Thanks for all the beep codes!
