My understanding of dual channel memory is that it is matched. With that said If I was to get two single channel at say at 4 4 4 12. Would I be able to use it in the dual channel slots ? If no why not. Thanks

50/50 chance. Either you can, or can't.

Matched memory only means that it was tested in a dual channel configuration, therefore its warrantied and guaranteed to run dual channel.

I've bought generic ram before not guaranteed for dual channel, and not matched, and it has worked.
