   Sometimes i forget to use the add/remove hardware option with Win 2k when taking my usb harddrive out. This prevents it from being detected again until i restart my computer.
   
   Is there anyway to get it working again without restarting.

   im not sure if this will work but you could try going to device manager right click something and scan for hardware changes.
