IBM Netvista Can't get online

I recently acquired an IBM Netvista 6579-PCU. I was only given the tower, no disks. I was able to reformat the harddrive and install Windows 98SE. I went to IBM.com and downloaded the drivers for this system. I can't get the ethernet to work though. In the device manager it sees PCI System Management Bus, PCI Ethernet Controller and PCI card. I try to reinstall driver or update and it still won't work. IBM doesn't provide system restore disks and I only know that the ethernet card itself says Pulse and is supposedly sold under Intel PRO/100. Can someone help me get on the internet with this computer????

 

Does the ethernet card show up in Device Manager with an exclamation point or question mark on a yellow background? If so delete the device while in Device Manager and reboot. Sometimes this will pickup and install drivers that have already been downloaded. I went throught this yesterday on an older IBM Aptiva E24 trying to get a modem driver installed. Even though the drivers were downloaded and applied Windows wouldn't install them until I deleted the modem and rebooted. Novice, Yes all three were shown in the device manager with ? marks. Yes, those are all the downloads I used. After 4 hours of trial and error, I realized that an intel chipset contolled the pci bus and needed drivers for it.(which I later realized were on the ibm site the whole time!) I finally have the internet up and running! I'm currently enrolled at a tech school for Microcomputer specialist. It's my first quarter, and totally reformating the harddrive, installing an OS, and finding all the appropriate drivers has given me the confidence that maybe I CAN do this for a living!
