    Hey all,

My folks are looking at getting a new TV and cant decide between an LCD and a Plasma.

They want the TV to be 42" and HD-Ready. A wide viewing angle is also needed.

Should they go for Plasma or LCD?

for such a big size plasma is probably your best bet. but I have heard plasma screens suffer from brn in, and in a few years when the plasma dries up your not gonna be too happy.I like those new thinner rear projection tvs with DLP, tehy aren't flat panel but they have a great picture and are cheaper.

say for them to go for a HD-Ready, digital LCD...they have at least twice the life expectancy on Plasma and from what ive seen from a plasma and lcd playing off a HD reciever, lcd has just a touch better picture :)

I owned a 46" plasma TV, a Pioneer rebadged as a Gateway brand. It lasted a little over 3 years and recently failed. I've yet to get it to service to be checked to see what failed. I recently purchased a 32" LCD as a replacement. Plasma displays are a relatively recent technology and the long term reliability hasn't been proven. I would recommend that you check into any manufacturer to see if they have any long term reliability info before purchasing a plasma display.

I was under the impression that LCD was now superior to plasma, both in expected longevity of the device and in quality of picture capability... I for one will be buying an LCD next.

Thanks for the responses everyone, looks like LCD is the winner!

Ill have to try and convince them that it may be worth the extra money in the long run!

Don't forget that LCD has it's own problems that you need to check.

Like dead pixels, viewing angles etc.

yeah, refresh rate(ghosting) and dead pixels can be a problem on cheap LCDs and you have to sit straight in front of one for it to look good.
