Default Some files on this volume could not be defragmented

I get this message after defragging:

Please check the defragmentation report for the list of these files.

It does not actually list any files afterwards. I know I do not have any spyware or viruses. This only started happening today; the only thing out of the norm that I did was rip a couple CDs I left at home to my harddrive. Any help or pointers to good free software would be nice I tried diskeeper lite, didn't like it.

That didn't really help, but thanks!
Any other pointers or should I just not worry about it?

A quick google check, and there seems to be a couple ways to defrag the MFT (Master Fat Table). One is painful and not really recommended.

The other two, is to try to download trials of o&o defrag, perfect disk, or Diskeeper:

oo defrag: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=809
perfect disk (old fav) http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=268
Diskeeper: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1208

Run the trials, remove your fragmentations within the MFT, and you should be good to go.

Is your hard drive pretty full? It could be because defrag needs at least 15% of your hard drive as free space. The last time I defragged, I got that error because I only had a couple gigs left, and it said something about needing 15% free space.
So basically, the first part of Franklin's link.

I use Perfect Disk here and the MFT gets two fragments every now and then.An offline defrag fixes that up.

Try shutting down all running apps and see how you go.

Every month or so I do what I call my ritual defrag with pefect disk.Bit weird but I'm sure most of us have our foibles when it comes to our pc's.

1.Shutdown all running apps-usually just ZAP and Sandboxie.

2.Open taskmanager and end explorer process.

3.Taskmanager-new task-run command to reset layout.ini file-"Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks"

4.Taskmanager-new task-perfect disk.exe-smart placement defrag,with Taskmanager shutdown

5.Taskmanager-new task-explorer

And Bob's your uncle,am I a weirdo or what!!

I personally would not worry about it, unless you see some sort of performance issue.

If you do, you can try one of the program I listed above to help ou.

As Langa states do you think that:
The files may have been in use or locked?
Did you defrag in SAFE Mode or via the Recovery Console?
Have you installed any software lately immediately before you generated this concerning result?
With Diskeeper Lite I was informed that it will not defrag the page/file system and that a second app was necassary for this (System File Defragmenter v2.32), I won't pretend to understand this clearly but followed the advice.

Have a look at this thread by myself:

http://forum.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=82838

And look at the last post maybe this will provide greater insight.

I am interested. How does one defrag via the recovery console?

I would be lying to state I implicitly know oh foolish one (no offence intended), but it is stated by Langa:

"In-use files may not be able to be defragged, either, because they're locked and in use. You can minimize the number of such files by running Defrag only in Safe Mode, or from the Recovery Console. If you're really desperate to achieve near-100% defragmentation, you can run defrag several times in a row; each pass may squeeze out a few more percent."

From:

http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2004/2004-07-01.htm

I would be guessing by tapping F8 at bootup and going into the recovery console instead of SafeMode (I'm not about to reboot to ascertian this as I have dial-up).
