Ok, guys and Gals, have any suggestions on a laptop that will power up but have a black screen?????
You can hear it boot up.... BUT I have no idea if there is a problem because you can't see anything on the screen, it just stays black. Do you think it is the backlight or crystal prob. on this?????

It could be hard drive failure, can you get in the BIOS?

If you can't get into the BIOS it is most likely the HDD.

 

Cannot read the bios, even if I could with the black screen. I have another laptop, we tried hooking parts together, but they are not compatible... because MY laptop won't power on.

Try this on for size, get a monitor, and plug it into the VGA port on your laptop, if there is a problem with the lcd it will show up on the monitor.

Are there any noises coming from the system ? What were you doing when it stopped working ?

 

Already plugged it into a monitor. Nothing happened. You can hear the laptop running. It sounds like it is going through the boot sequence. Fan etc., I hear. But black screen.
I don't know what it was doing before it quit working. A high school boy brought it over today, he bought at a yard sale for 5.00, as is. We sat for hours messing around with it. I even tore it apart looking for anything missing and unplugged. everything looked fine.

 

How many sticks of ram does it have? If it has two try pulling out one, and rebooting. then the other, it could be a ram problem. but if you hooked it up to an external monitor then there isn't anything wrong with the display

 

The same thing happened when I hooked it up to the external monitor. Nothing. It was still black. The kid took it last night, but I told him I would wait for suggestions and get back at him.
