    Hi all

I am just starting to build a new PC for myself and as I have done on previous builds I have decided to use Intel processors

The thing is I see that there are two options 478 or 775, both seem to be available in all speeds with or without HT tech.

I was just wondering if anyone knew what the difference was ?

    Many thanks

go with 775, it is newer, it supports the core duo processors and i believe it is the only one that supports DDR2 memory.also it supports all the new processor cores, which are a lot better than presscot. you could also go with socket 939(AMD) what are you planning to use your PC for?

The physical difference is easily seen on Gogle,Images or many web sites. More advantages to 775, and 478 components are getting harderto find and will be more cosly, if not more costly now.
Saying that I loves the 478pin processors, but I'm always a little behid the times
    :) :)

I'd go with socket 755, purely because it's a lot more up to date. Also, the 755 has a much much wider range of coolers compared to the 478 :)

Edit: Wow, just realised.. I'm a Corporal :D

Out of the two sockets like mentioned in the two posts above go with the latest version in the LGA775 as you'll have more scope for upgrades, plus the latest and fastest hardware will be compatible as in PCI-E, DDR2 etc as your sticking with Intel...

Motherboards based on the 975X or 955X Express Chipset offers good performance http://www.viperlair.com/reviews/cpu_mobo/intel/lga775/presprev/

thanks to you all for the responses

I use my PC for gaming mainly hence the need for an upgrade as I have noticed on a few of the newer games I have to have my settings on highest frame rate to play them rather than highest detail graphics. So I thought I may as well upgrade my whole system !

Anyway I will go with the 775

    Thanks again for the answers

AMD owns in gaming, you should have a look at these benchmarks;)
