So, with the leaps and bounds in hardware, more specifically, audio/video, and with the advent of the physx processor, I have began thinking to myself... now no flaming! :p Is the CPU becoming obsolete when it comes to gaming!? Will any of the next generations games need a high powered CPU when just about every gameplay mechanic in a High-end gaming rig will be or already is no longer being handled by the CPU, but another add-on part? Is one persons FX-60 realy going to matter then all it is processing is an NPC's scripting!? Just thought I would throw that thought out there... who knows, maybe processors will start lasting (and being usable in gaming) for more than a year now!

Disclaimer: I know a CPU doesnt ONLY handle scripting!

Oh...I think as time goes on, the CPU will increase in importance. AI is getting increasingly complex, and the CPU handles that entirely. Now with new games starting to come out multi-threaded, we see that one core can handle AI, and the other core is free to handle whatever else.

I think the days of single core high clock CPUs is numbered however. I think the future is in dual and quad core computing.

No flaming? Pffft, I'm unsure where flames would even become in an issue with this thread ;)

What will happen is what always happens. A computer programmer will write code to utilize the extra power.
    Game will become more intensive.
