Tried to install windows98se over 95.Inserted disc went through process and it gave me a message that I would have to do an upgrade of 98 first. The system is an old IBM aptiva mod#2176-C66 if you need to know more I will provide the info. My question is can I put 98 on this system?

The answer is yes - you can put 98 on the system but what you appear to be doing is an upgrade from 95 and to get to 98SE you have to go via 98. If the 98SE is the real McCoy and not just an upgrade disk then juts format the HD and install 98SE that way. But don't forget to backup your personal files first. ;)
