DVD/CD-R not working code 39

I have a Dell Dimension 4400 74.5gb window XP . My DVD/CD-R will not work
in device manager getting yellow ! mark for HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B.I tried to uninstall and scan hardware did hardware wizard and I am confused.
It keeps coming back installed .I do not want to mess it up.What do I need
to do please and how much would a new drive cost?

 

the yellow question mark means the deivice isnt working properly this could be from either a broken drive or bad/incorrect drivers for it. Look on the Dell backup drivers cd.
I googled "HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B" and the first link came up with a forum that contains a link for the drivers http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?action=download&driverid=115177 you need an account to download the drivers but it is free.
If this doesnt work contact dell tech support (thats what they are known for)
And if your drive doesnt work a replacement drive costs 30-50 dollars depending on speed and quality.

 

I did some research on your drive and there have been other reports of people having these same problems so you are not alone. If you have to buy another CD-R/DVD drive i woudl recommend to stay away from LG (the current drive you own) and get something fromt he majoy brands like HP/Sony/Plextor because they provide good tech support and easy to find driver updates.

Thanks for responding so a virus or malware would not have caused that right?I guess not I have had not had any problems really. I am not real computer savy would deleting a shared C program like acrc soft camera have done this .O well it really is not that bad right .I appreciate your research will check it out. Regards
