Just wondering why computers make a clicking sound when its trying to process information.

I tried to look this up on the net but couldnt find anything.

It wouldn't be the processor that is clicking. It's the hard drive. Hard drives click because they have arms which move over the plates inside the hard drive. Usually if this sound starts to get louder its an indication that the HD is dieing.

Please note, that's only if it gets louder, you can pretty much always hear a clicking sound anyways.

If your Hard Drive is making clicking sounds you should back up all the data you want saved as soon as possible because that clicking sound is an indication that the Hard Drive may have bad sectors, etc., etc. and is Failing.
    Sorry....:(

While I completely agree with Toni_1947 about backing up data (you should do that regularly anyways, just to be safe), it would be wise to note that some HDD are just louder then other ones, ie, the WD Raptor is an extremely loud HDD, I have two of them and they have been loud since i installed them over 3 months ago, are the dieing? Nah, they are just loud as can be. Back up your data just to be safe, but lets not jump too conclusions.

Happened to me twice, a slight clicking until it sounded like a squirrel with nuts (walnuts) in a sqeaky wheel.

Here are a few things you can do to find info on the health of your HD and give yourself some piece of mind:

    (1) Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer
There are three sections: Applications and System is where you want to look for any entries preceded by a yellow warning sign or a red circle with a white X=Error
Double click any you find and it will give you details about the warning or error

    (2)Open "My Computer",right click your hard drive(mine is C:>Properties>Tools>Error Checking>Check Now
In the pop up window select "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors">Start
You will have to restart before the check takes place.

    (3) Go Here:*PC Pitstop
Full Set of PC Diagnostics Tests & Recommendations
    * http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp , run the full set of scans and see what they find.

I lost 2 hard drives within weeks of first hearing those "Clicking" sounds. The first time I wasn't prepared and lost a lot of important data I hadn't backed up yet...the second time I was ready for the worst and managed to save all my important data.

Here you can listen to sounds of a "sick" hard drive...very interesting: http://www.hgst.com/hddt/knowtree.n...4b1a62a50f405d0d86256756006e340c?OpenDocument

    If nothing else...it's an "adventure"...:)
