    Do the following:

    1. Start
    2. Settings
    3. Control Panel
    4. System
    5. Click on the tab "Device Manager"
    6. Post any devices that have a Yellow Flag next to them.

when i have the problem with the mp3 playback, the only thing flaged is pci 168 dos emulator, when i reinstall that goes away

in either case, the modem is not detected, in device manager or under unknown pci card

If its not showing up there chances are its not completely plugged into your motherboard. What I would do is move it from the slot its in and move it into a blank one then see if Windows detects it.

one of the first things I do when I have a computer shiped in is to reseat any and all cards, but checked it anyway and get the same results. Just b/c I worked on computers putting them together for 6 years does not make me a genious, so that's why i come here to ask[NOT to be sarcastic]. There's only so much I know about these things. thanks.

    sgtfinns;

try a look at the bios on boot up and maybe pause the machine as it boots and watch the card assignments,

then look at the device manger and look ath the irq assignments and look for conflicts.

another thought the driver u have may not be the best for the card try the 3com site and maybe a message to the tech support.

I fought something similar on a k6 amd machine and win98 it turned out to be the driver software.

the net card assigment should not conflict with the sound but since windows loves to move things around u just need to look and chase it down.

    hope it helps

took the modem out and found dirt in the pci slot, cleaned it out, cleaned the pci pins on the card.....bingo is found on boot up, but the 3 com driver disk does not fully install the drivers.....it comes up with a conflict anyway, which i am not worried about right now as I use dsl, but it's nice to have some kind of backup equipment just in case......while i had modem out for giggles I tried the sound and have the same trouble with the sound card......I loose the mp3 end but not the standard windows sounds......but hey, it's a used computer, a challange......now where is my 15 pound sledge??? btw.....it's an azt3328 sound chip

What player are you using in Windows to play your mp3's and what is the version of it?

the media player i am using is the standard that comes with windows 98 se. The card has been pulled out guys. It started acting up some more so I tried it in another computer and it does nothing, put it in the unit it came in, does nothing, so I think i can safely say it took el craperino. What can I say, some days the bear gets you......or me in this case. Thanks for all the help guys

Download Winamp from the link below and try your MP3 files with it and see if they play.

If they still don't work download the file below.

    http://jillandaaron.com/pcrepair/audio.zip/

You will need Winzip, WinRAR or 7-Zip in order to extract the file from the file.

To install it you will need to do the following steps:
    1. Start
    2. settings
    3. Control Panel
    4. System
    5. Click on the tab Device Manager
    6. Find you Sound Device under "Sound, video and game controllers"
    7. Right click on it and select "Update Driver", if Update Driver not there the select properties and look for it under one of the tabs.
    8. Go through the Wizard and browse for the files which you extracted from the .zip file. Select the English folder.
    9. Finish the Wizard hopefully without error and restart your PC.

Let me know if any of this works for you.
