Hey I am going to buy a new pc, and am considering 2 cpu's. I prefer AMD, but bias aside, which of these is better:

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2.2 GHz I believe) (dual core)
    or
Intel Pentium D 930 Dual Core 3.0 GHz

The intel chip is only 32 bit (i believe) but it has a considerably higher clock speed. Also most software doesnt even support 32 bits and only does if u have a 64 bit os from what i gather. Will an expert enlighten me on this?

99.99% of software out there is 32 bit.

AMD is 32/64 bit. The 3800+ is probably faster, depending on what you are doing with it.

Yay for AMD! Fan boy opinions aside, just because a cpu has a lower clock speed does not mean it is slower, this is especially true when comparing AMD too Intel cpu's. My 2.6 GHz AMD is rated as a 4.0 GHz Intel chip, so just keep that in mind. While Intel chips generally have a higher clock speed, from what I understand, AMD chips do more calculations per clock cycle... either way, AMD FTW!

Ok thanks guys. I looked at the benchmarks too, you're right. Even the lower x2 series chips are faster than the fastest Pentium D chips. Even the intel single core extreme 3.72 GHz processor is neck and neck with the AMD 64 x2 4200+, which i think ill get instead of the 3800+, since its only $70 more.
