I need a new video card.

Newegg has an X850XT (HIS) for $199 with a $30 MIR.

They also have an eVGA 7600GT for $179. The 7600GT has fewer pipelines, but way higher clock speeds.

    Which is the better deal?

Also, I've heard rumors that ATI cards do better with HDR. Is this true?

    Thanks,
    Cody

I would go with the eVGA 7600GT :D

Why? Because of the Pixel Shader 3.0 and the HDR support?

By the way, the title is supposed to say 7600GT** and not 7900GT.

At stock speeds it equals the performance of an overclocked X850XT, and the fact that this one is quieter, cooler, uses less power, uses a single slot and has SM3 support make it a better buy, not to mention it costs about the same too.

    Cool, thanks :)

By the way, is an AMD Opteron 144 Venus an okay gaming processor? It's $170.

By the way is this true or did you just copy and paste the customer review from Newegg?

"This is a great card for the money. At stock speeds it equals the performance of my friends overclocked X850XT, and the fact that this one is quieter, cooler, uses less power, uses a single slot and has SM3 support make it a MUCH better buy."

    Just wondering, heh. :p

When I saw 7900GT I was like are you kidding??

I'd choose the 7600GT for the reasons above. Plus I tend to prefer NVidia in general. :p
The ATIx1900, for example, has fewer pipelines, but more shader, so it depends what you want.

to answer your other question, opterons are great gaming processors and totally awesome overclockers. I too would go with the 7600gt for the following reasons:

    1) Nvidia rocks, ATI sux lol
    2) SM 3.0 is a must for modern and future games
    BUT
    1) ATI has better image quality (Avivo for video playback, HDR and AA simultaneously)

im not sure how the 7600 is as an overclocker as its a new card and not many people have them but im pretty sure that the x850 is pretty good at overclocking....
