I'm running XP Pro Service Pack 2, with MS Office XP Version 10.0.6789.
I have already modified the registry per kb 918165.

When I try to open a Word document, there are 2 messages which display in succession, and then repeat:
"The language DLL 'VBE6INTL.DLL' could not be found."
"The Visual Basic environment could not be initialized."
Each time, I have sent the error report to MS.

After a few tries, it offers to open Word in safe mode. From there I can modify my document as I intended, but I cannot open a document without going through this.

Can you tell me how to correct this?

Not sure but next time you open I would "Select All" > Copy and create a new document and paste, save this new copy with a slightly different file name, eg. xxxx1.doc. Often copy and resaving a doc can salvage them to a more "fuctioning
    state".

WARNING IF YOU HAVE EXCESSIVE EMBEDDED EDITTING FEATURES WITHIN DOC MAY BE LOST, eg table links, hyperlinks, pictures, etc.

From personal experience, embedded editing can cause doc file size to blow out but also increase likelihood of corruption occuring. If there are many tables, graphs, pictures often best to save them in a sperate doc (if many of these then several seperate files) and call them appendices.

I just tried this, but was unable to use "select all," and quickly the error message came that MS had to close. The document I'm trying to open is simply a list of books, in 2 columns, with titles underlined, so there's not a lot of formatting.

Switch to www.openoffice.org 's suite of office products. It is 100% free and doesnt have these troubles.

the program "Writer" that is included in the suite is almost exactly like ms word and it will open word documents

    Hope this helps.

Have you done a detect & repair of office. Open word/help. It's in there.

I did a detect and repair, and there was no difference.
I did a system restore, and that, at least, let me open My Documents (which I was unable to do when I booted up the computer this morning), but would not let me open a document.

Each time I open a document, I have a virus scanner scan the file. My computer's antivirus and antispyware is up-to-date. No problems found.

I have no clue about what top try next, short of downloading the office product mentioned in another reply. Why can't this be fixed?

I just tried to download openoffice.org, but the choice of Windows was with or without JRE. I've sent an e-mail to them to inquire, since I don't know what JRE stands for.

    JRE Standsfore Java Runtime Environment.
This provides scripting for the open office.org programs

Download the JRE Version. You will not notice any diference for your uses.

    RENAME NORMAL.DOT

    1. Make sure all Office applications are closed, including Word.
    2. Click Start | Search| For Files or Folders.
    3. In Search For Files Or Folders Named, type Normal.dot.
    4. Click Search Now.
    5. Click to select Normal.dot.
    6. On the File menu, click Rename.
    7. Rename Normal.dot to Normal.old.
    8. If there are more than one, rename them all just like the one above.
    9. On the File menu, click Close.

Open Word, hopefully that will fix it.

Steve, I did the search, and there wasn't a single file named Normal.dot. ??
No Office products were open, and I even unpinned Word from the start menu. Now what?

Open Windows Explorer, and go to Tools > Folder Options. Choose the View tab, and choose to Show Hidden Files and Folders.

    Now look for Normal.dot

Steve, I found that was already checked. On the search box, I checked "Show hidden files" and two files showed up: Normal, and
~Normal. Neither had a dot. I renamed both as Normal.old, and went
    back to Word.

Sadly, there is no change in the way it operates: I still get the 2
error messages which repeat once or twice, then MS has to shut it
    down.

By the way, I checked an Excel file and found that the 2 error messages
come up there, on the way in and on the way out, but the program
doesn't shut down. I don't understand what the difference is between
    the two.

It also doesn't matter if the file is on c: or on a:
