I transfer files from the l/top to the d/top each night through a LAN hardwire.
The d/top LAN connection icon says, "connected; 100Mb/s". The l/top LAN connection icon says, "limited or no connectivity; 100 Mb/s". The l/top LAN connection icon details say "the network did not assigned a network address to the computer. Files can be transferred, in either direction, IF EXECUTED ON THE L/TOP, since all network targets are listed in the 'my network places' folder, on the l/top. However, transfers cannot be executed on the d/top, since when the d/top 'my network places folder' is open, the l/top targets are not shown. Confused? Me neither. I need only to change a setting somewhere. Got clue? : : : |

Is your LAN just a crossover cable?
What is handing out IPs on your network? Have you ran ipconfig on the laptop? Sounds like (wild guess) that via the laptop & netbeui you can access the workgroup and transfer files.. |

IP I'm thinkin' hasn't been assigned - see attached. IPCONFIG won't run on laptop. Punch it up in 'run', and a command prompt window pops up for a split second, then goes away. |

Use "cmd" line for ipconfig. Run>cmd>ipconfig
Using dhcp?

Hey technaut, sorry, didn't notice it was you!!! Thanks again for your help on that issue I had at work with our access points!!
Can you map the drive? Are the folders marked as shared? Probably stupid questions, but I'm old and stupid and it helps me to get a clear picture of what's up to try to figure where to go with it. |

Repair function fails to renew IP address on laptop, and desktop.
I am seeing also that on both pc's,'view workgroup computers', shows only the desktop; not the laptop:o : : : : : |

Accouple of shots in the dark ..... run: ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew
If that doen't work, try assirning an ip address ..... under properties for the local, choose static and assign them both an ip address ..... restart and see if they connect..... if not, you can go back to auto detect. and pray....Let me do some research and get back to you. also show the ipconfig /all |

The answer is here. I'm not seein' it tho'...
Is it 'IP routing not enabled' that's causing this limited connectivity? |

Last stupid question before I go to bed ..... did you open network connections and choose add a network place .... then the "other" option, which should open all local connections and let you browse for the other computer. Probably under Microsoft windows network ......shows all the computers on my home network. Going to bed ....check with you tomorrow.

Just found that the d/top had XP firewall setting enabled for LAN.
This explained why the d/top could ping the l/top, but the l/top could not get ping reply from d/top. So NOW the 'LIMITED CONNECTIVITY' icon on the l/top changed to FULL CONNECTIVITY, right? Wrong. : : :o : : : |

Oh, man ..... do you see the other computer in my network places? Have you tried mapping the drive ... everything that you want shared is marked shared? Have you "added" in network connections? I'm running out of ideas ....wish I was infront of the setup. Just for clarity, the two computers are only connected with a cross over? No routers involved ....simply direct connect?

Yup, each pc appears in the others' 'network places' folder.
No, haven't mapped either as a drive. Is that necessary? Yeah, direct connect. No router. All shared folders appear as well, with complete connectivity. Just that 'limited connectivity' icon on the l/top is unexplained , and the inability to 'repair'... |

So you are connecting both ways, it's just that the icon is telling you it's limited? Yeah, mapping the drives does help establish the connectivity (me thinks) ...are you able to transfer files both ways now?

This time necessity has got to be related to the 'limited connectivity' issue... |

Sorry .... I can be slow sometimes .... sort of like your connection (haha! - sorry about that one too!)
I thought you could only transfer one way, way back in the beginning ... but now I'm thinking it might be hardware related .... can you swap out ethernet cards? Got a spare or two sitting around? Can't imagine why one would be grinding away trying to get connected ...usually instant or just not going to happen. |
