    LAN details

Compaq w/XP Home/shared connected to DSL router & SMC EZ Switch
Gateway w/XP Pro connected to SMC EZ Switch
ECS M787CL+ w/XP Pro connected to SMC EZ SWitch
Gateway and ECS DHCP and no proxy settings

    Problem

    Compaq - No Problem
    Gateway - No Problem
ECS is the new box to the LAN and pings to IPs but cannot connect to some via browser
Can ping microsoft.com but cannot connect via IE, Opera or Mozilla
My daughter was given this system and I am trying to get it sorted out.
Most sites I connect to fine, but some few will never connect on any browser.
I ran a local port scanner and from ports 1 - 3978 Only 135, 445 and 1025 are open to TCP
Opening them via XP firewall has not changed that status and IPSEC has no rules set.

    Any ideas out there?

Can ping myspace.com but cannot connect via IE, Opera or Mozilla

Try resetting your Security (all 4 locations), Privacy, and Advaced settings to Default in Internet Options in the Control Panel.

No joy on the resets, I have wanted to try the MS recommendation for IE6 repair, but am waiting word on wheather the XP CD will be forthcoming. The free computer the daughter got was not accompanied by the CD.

Only thing I can think of is that Pest Patrol is set to hyperactive.

Try booting in Safe Mode with Networking support, and then try some of those websites you know don't work.

Did you try looking at your dns numbers by any chance...they maybe wrong...allowing you to ping but not resolve dns names.

Safe mode reacts the same and I am DHCP on the affected system, as is the other client and it handles connecting fine. The odeur du format is wafting about, I hate that, but I am really perplexed by this.

if you can get a hold of a static dns server at your isp (just give them a call), use their ip address instead of using your dsl modem as a dns forwarder. if you still have problems, try using a different dns service, like open dns. just put their dns ips into your daughter's network configuration. opendns also prevents from phishing sites.
