    Hi
I am new here and I need Help really bad. I purchased a Fantom USB2.0 External Hard Drive and I can't get my PC to reconize it. Maybe I picked the wrong one.. Maybe I should have gotten a regular USB one and not a USB 2.0.

My Operating System is Windows ME. The specifications for this EHD is 233 MHZ Pentium, 32 MB RAM, a USB port, Win 98SE or ME or Xp or 2000, My system meets the specifications! I was told that if I had all my MS updates I wouldn't need to use the software that came with this external hard drive, by the way the software says it is for Windows 98 only cause I tried it. Go figure.
The only updates I didn't get were Media 9 cause I don't use it for my media projects, NT 4.0 The instructions say not to use this EHD with NT 4.0 so I am good on this one.

I don't know the difference between USB and USB 2.0 so maybe this is where my problem is. I have two USB ports in the back of my computer and two on the front. One(both front and back) has an icon on it that looks like maybe a dagger and one(both front and back) that has no icon. My system will not detect that any new hardware has been found, neither plug n play nor internal as my system will search for both.

I read something on this forum about a PCI add on card. Did I pick the wrong External hard drive and/or do I need to get one of these add on cards maybe? I am ready to throw this thing against the wall and I really need some help getting it to work or I need to know I got the wrong one.

Thank you for any help you can provide!!

Ok I will do my best to push you in a direction. Did you install the drive in an enclosure or did you buy it whole? My best guess would be you bought it as a unit. With the drive plugged in and powered on (make sure the drive it self spins) do you get a signal on the computer that something is plugged into a usb port ? I had this happen to me once before, using my USb external on a ME based computer, and I installed the drivers that came on the disk, I had to use the windows 98 drivers but everything worked out in the end.

The pci card is for usb 2.0, your drive Should work on usb 1.1 at a slower transfer speed, and it will complain heavily about it every time you plug it in. But it should work. Good Luck

Thank you for your help. The EHD I bought is in its own unit and sets outside of my CPU. The EHD does spin itself. I get nothing signaling me that anything is plugged into a USB port. I tried using the software that came with the EHD and it keeps saying this software is for Win98 ONLY and will not load!

ok two more things to try, go to control panel, system, device manager, and look for a device with a problem, these are usualy marked with some kind of exclamation point.
Then go to the site that makes the device and check out downloads and see if they have an updated driver for ME.

How big is this drive ? I seem to remember something about ME not seeing drives bigger then 137 GB.

Also try changing usb ports, maybe there is a problem with one of the ports.

Thank you so much for trying to help me with this. It is only a 120 EHD. Yes there is an indicator in yellow. It is marked on what is called "USB Disk". when I click on it though ,it attempts to read my A:\ drive. I will try and locate a drive for ME and see if that will work.
