is there an 'insert key' toggle on the mac

Ok, here is the deal. : We are using Mac laptops for the summer that our school (college) gave us to use and we are having a problem. (you will notice from my past posts that I am a regular pc user,not mac). Somehow one of us accidentally :o did something while going back in a paper ( using microsoft word for OS x) to add a missing letter. Now while she types the missing letter, the computer is erasing the letters previously types in front of it. :: I have been trying different combinations of various keys to fix the problem with no luck. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? Please someone help.

in MS Word, do the following:

Press on the "OVR" at the bottom, toward the right. If it's selected it'll be a green dot, if it's not selected it'll be hollow. That should toggle back and forth.
