Default Need help with Puta!..com

I somehow got the Puta virus on my other computer. I ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, and finally AVG. After running AVG, my computer will no longer restart in normal mode (It says there is a problem with Kernel32, and I should reinstall Windows). I can only use safe mode.

How can I fix this? Is there any way I can back up any important files? I can't connect to my LAN or the internet, and I can't use my DVD burner.

I also ran Hijack This, but I am unable to easily get the log. If it's necessary, I can write it down and type it.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
  • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
  • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
  • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
  • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
  • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis
.

Default Re: Need help with Puta!..com

Thank you for the link, but I am unable to do most of these steps. The infected computer can only be started in safe mode, and since it's on a network, I am unable to connect to the internet or any other computer on the network.

I am only able to run programs that were already on my computer (Ad-Aware, Spybot, AVG) and I was able to install CCleaner via floppy disc.

Is there any way to use my CD/DVD drive in safe mode? If so, I can easily burn a disc with the other programs you recommended that are too large for a floppy.

I ran CCleaner and here's my latest Hijack This log. Any help will be much appreciated.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
F1 - win.ini: run=c:\windows\scrsvr.exe,c:\windows\puta!!.com
O2 - BHO: CDLPObj Object - {BE2ED590-CA49-46B5-8CCE-244FB2E0D1AA} - C:\WINDOWS\DLP.DLL
O4 - Startup: msupdate.exe

After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete
:
c:\windows\scrsvr.exe
c:\windows\puta!!.com
C:\WINDOWS\DLP.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\msupdate.exe or C:\WINDOWS\system\msupdate.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST)
.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
  1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
  2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
  3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Thank you for the reply. I did everything you recommended. After using Hijack This and rebooting in safe mode, I was only able to find one of the four files (scrsvr.exe). There was an invisible, Read-Only, Startup shortcut for msupdate.exe, and I deleted it. I searched files and folders and didn't find the others.

After completing the other steps, and rebooting in normal mode, I still got the same error as before. It said there was a problem with Kernel 32 and I should reinstall Windows, then the computer shuts down. Am I screwed?

If it helps, I never got the Kernel 32 error until I ran AVG a few days ago before starting this post.

I have have attached the Hijack This log below. I appreciate you helping me out.

I just ran AVG and I'm still showing over 60 infected files (Kernel32, Notepad, Mplayer, Winamp, IE, Nero, just to name a few). Two files were healed automatically.

When I ran AVG before, it didn't show this many. Then again, I don't think it ever finished. After only a few minutes, I think it said a restart was necessary. This time around, it took about 30 minutes.

Anyway, over 60 infected files identified Win32 / Dupator. It said a restart was necessary, but it's impossible to restart in anything but safe mode.

The below info is direct from Grisoft. Give it a try.

Win32/Dupator

Download the remover rmdptor.exe. Restart your computer in DOS mode and run the remover.

Note: Default path set in this utility is to scan C: drive. If you want to change this value, run the utility as: rmvalla.exe <drive letter>:\

Thanks, chaslang. I used the program, and all 60 infected files were healed. After installing, it said that Kernel32.dll needed to be replaced.

Where can I get a replacement Kernel32 for Windows ME? I only have the system recovery discs, and I don't see the file.

That's the problem with PC manufacturers shipping only recovery disks!

Here are instructions from MS about getting a new copy of the file but you need a CD

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q146419/

You may have another copy of your PC. Search for one to see. Otherwise you need to take this into the Software Forum as it is not a malware subject. There are sites to download various DLLs from but you need the one for your OS and many of them just have the DLLs for current Windows versions.

Thank you for your help, Chaslang. After I replace the DLL, perform all the steps from the sticky, and back up everything important, I'll probably just replace Windows ME.

Replace it with what! Do not upgrade to another OS if you plan on changing to Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Make sure you do a partition, format, and an install of the new OS. Upgrading from Me to another OS typically results in a flaky install. Also if you are thinking of running Win XP you need a lot more horsepower than you needed for WinMe. So be sure you check system resquirements first. And don't believe what Microsoft advertizes for minimum requirements on Win XP. I would not install it on any PC running slower than 1.2 Ghz and also with less than 512 Mb of RAM.
