Try Microsoft Office 2004 (I believe that to be the latest version for Mac). It will include MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Entourage (email), & MS Messenger (prefer Yahoo Messenger myself).

As this laptop would be used at a college get MS office Teacher and Student edition. I've got it and it works fine and more to the point it is a lot cheaper.

Good point CG.
Keep in mind w/ Student Edition (I believe) it ends being usable after 4 years. Of course in 4 years there will likely be new software and/or versions.

Even though Safari is a great browser, a lot of people end up downloading FireFox for Mac as well. Many people are dissapointed to find that Firefox does not work as well on Mac's as they do as Windows. The browser that gives you the stability of FireFox and supports the standards as well is called Camino. I recomend you check it out.

VLC video player is another good program. There is limited WMV support for Macs. VLC plays all kinds of videos. I hope this helps
