Default Why popular antivirus apps 'do not work'

Finally, a "large" news organization hops on the bandwagon we have spouted for years. These large companies sell huge by putting them on prominent display at your local store promising total protection in one package for as much as a hundred dollars as well as retail bundles on computers such as Dell, Gateway, Hewlett Packard and Compaq. In reality, these programs do NOT work well and tend to be very bloated degrading your computer performance. This is why we do not suggest you give these companies more money unless they improve their products. The sad reality is they are playing on their large, well known names, to make you feel all warm and fuzzy.

At MajorGeeks, we suggest you try other anti-virus, including free ones. Here are some you can try. View the description, check the screenshot and try the one that you like the most:

AVG has kept the owners here, and the files you download, clean for over 5 years:

Avast is a popular choice:

AntiVir is another popular choice:

ClamAV is newer, but gaining in popularity:

Like spending money? Try NOD32 (Not really for the novice):

Of course, do not forgot to practice what I have long called "safe surfing" to avoid most problems. Examples include not opening or clicking on links in email. Be leary of prompts to install something you do not want, known as drive by downloads sometimes. If you get a popup, always close the windows in the top right corner, many are designed to get you to click in an area that makes it appear your closing the window, but you are actually clicking the ad. Music, porn, retail programs and studio movies are NOT free in any case, so if you download any of these, your at risk. Bookmark favorite pages, do not type them in (typing errors can lead to infections from parked domain names waiting for you to make that mistake) and use known search engines that check for spelling errors, like Google, when searching. McAfee Site advisor ( can warn you of potentially dangerous websites.

Following these simple steps will keep you out of trouble almost always!
