    Hey,

What is the optimal temperature for a CPU to be at? Is 32 degrees Celcius good or should I get a few more fans?

Depends on the CPU Dan, but for most anything over 50 degrees Celcius is cause for concern and more cooling. Hope that helps

Oh ok. I was really only looking for a ball-park figure actually, since my bios were set to shut off my computer 95 degrees F, and I was approaching that fast.

I'm trying to get my signature to work....so people can see my specs when I post something. Let's see if it shows up now.

My laptop is always hot and the fans are on even when it's idle..

I downloaded sensor view and it says I'm running at 49 C

I don't know how to fix this...

    Specs:

    hp pavilion ze5400
    Windows XP Home
    Pentium 4 2.66Ghz
    960 MB RAM

Don't know what other info to give...

Sadly, laptops with Pentium 4 chips are always hot, I'm lead to believe.:p

That is why most laptops nowadays do not have P4 chips in them.

You might try lifting your laptop a little bit higher off your desk, but make sure you don't block the inlet or exhaust vents.

You could try placing a fan, blowing into the inlet vent.
Also there are laptop coolers you can get.

Nearly 5,000,000 links on google. :D

Hope this points you to possible solutions. Bazza

Ooops, should have welcomed you to Major Geeks, as well. :) :D Baz

That fan on the back is not on...

The docking station I use props up the back end about an inch or two..

If I'm not on it I usually have a book or something back there..

The tech people at hp kept telling me to update my BIOS, but after

running their diagnostics utility, it says I don't need to..

Should I try to get that fan replaced?

Thanks for the link.. I might get one of those..

my friend has a laptop with a p4 in it and it runs at about that same temp. It would be high for a desktop but for a laptop it may be just a little bit over average.

Also, the fan shouldnt ALWAYS be on, just when temps get to a certain lvl. Does it ever turn on?

It got up to 52 C and it never came on..

A few minutes after I turn on my comp the other two come on

and they don't shut off until I shut off my comp..

I solved my heating problem by placing a fan on the HDD :D

    You're welcome. :)
Let us know if you get a cooler, what brand, etc., and if it makes a big difference.

    I feel smart...

I used a can of compressed air and sprayed some dust out of the

vents and fan area and it's now running at 41 C...

It's been a while since I gave my comp a good cleaning...

I still haven't seen the fan on the back come on...

I will probably just get it replaced...

Viper Boy pointed out that your CPU Fan will be activated relative to your CPU temp, i.e. if your CPU gets above say 50C for 2-5mins. your fan will come on until it is cooled to say 45C and then switch off. I wouldn't go and get the fan replaced as "if it aint broke don't fix". Basically you would just waste your money and if you goto a questionable tech they may indeed just "rip you off" and you will have exactly they same situation (a temp rensposive fan).

41C for a P4 laptop is an excellent temp imho and unless you start hitting 65C I personally would not be concerned.

I have a P4 Prescott desktop that is currently @47C and it hits 60C often but I am not concerned as this is the temps this CPU will run at.

My girlfreind has a laptop and the fan operates intermittently relative to temp so don't be concerned.

While we're talking about fans, let me ask; If I install a fan next to my Hard Drive bay (actually, with the case I have, there's a bracket/mount so I can do so), will it always be running? Is there any way to monitor the temp of my hard drive.

Or do I have this all wrong...what exactly is the purpose of cooling one's HD? What would make it overheat? Transferring Mp3's too much??

You can check that out in the Bios of your computer by hitting "delete" when you reboot (at the boot menu). I think it's under the tab "Power" or "Power Supply" or something like that. Usually if you just go to each entry the side panel on your right will tell you what is in the subsequent category if you hit enter.

You can assess it in many ways but your CPU must have some form of temp sensor. Okay the first way (generally the most accurate) is to tap "Delete" at as soon as you turn the PC on and enter your BIOS. Within your BIOS there should be an option for "PC Health" (or something to this effect as BIOS vary significantly) and this will display many parameters about your PC. Another option is to download a diagnostic/monitoring prog. Many here use EVEREST Home:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181

Install, expand Computer and click on Sensors. This will display all information from any and all onboard sensors (temps/volts/rpms) if your system has them.

Sorry Dan just saw your post

Thanks for the info... I am honestly not sure what temperature that fan is supposed to turn on, but I have never seen it on..I have never seen my CPU get above 54 C though.. I have been looking on the HP site but can't find any info about what temp that fan is supposed to come on...

You are right, there is really nothing wrong(it never crashes or anything), it just feels really hot sometimes when I put my hand on the bottom of my comp...

I hate giving my comp to someone else to fix anyway. If there is a problem I want to fix it myself. Helps the learning process..

yea laptops can get unnervingly hot sometimes which may seem bad but apparently thats how its supposed to be. You have a p4 right? pentium 4s are notoriously hot (at least the prescott cores) and can stand heat up to around 80C so your computer should be just fine.

Heres an excellent link on laptop disassembly and if they don't have your specfic make & model you can still use it generically and as refrence. I use it ti disassemble PC2 below:

    http://www.irisvista.com/

Just take your time and go slowly and patiently. I pull apart our laptop once or twice a year and refresh the thermal paste and clean out the crud.

  24. Dan_The_Man

    Dan_The_Man Private E-2

Why change the thermal paste on a laptop? You're not OCing are you? I don't see the point in doing this more than once every couple years...if you have your laptop for that long.

Well the first time was the only time it had ever been done (in 4-5 years) and the second time I was fixing other components and while it was completely apart why not?!? But yea 1-2 years would be fine, but should completly unplug and use a vacum on high and suck out all the crud.
