Default Desktop folder problem

One day I noticed that when I logged into my mac, 2 folders on my desktop would be missing. Well, their names would appear but with no folder icon, and as soon as you clicked on them they would simply dissappear. I did a spotlight search but according to it they do not exist. Any Suggestions?

Are these empty folders?

Can you delete them? Do they come back? What name s do they have?

No the folders are not empty. One is called 'Icons' and has lots of folders in it with icons, and the other is called 'Desktop Stuff', which has some applications in and other stuff which I can't remember. You can't delete them because as soon as you click on them they dissappear. They re-appear after log-on

I would suggest to run "Disk Utility" to "Repair Disk Permissions" and "Verify Disk". If your drive have problems from "Verify Disk" then you will need to boot up from a System CD or DVD to run the "Disk Utility" again and this time to "Repair Disk".
Also, I would suggest to boot up in "Safe Mode" and see if you can access those folders. One last suggestion, is to boot up from a different hard disk and see if you can access those folders.
good luck

I tried all the suggestions but the 2 folders are still 'invisible'

There were no hard disk errors according to disc check.

Thanks for your help though, but I have created two new folders to replace the ones that went missing.
