After i cleaned my pc from spyware/malware using processes stated in the spyware removal section of this forum, i have had a problem with windows firewall. I cant seem to disable it, hence i can not share certain folders on my network. When i go to control panel and then windows firewall and try to disable the firewall....on that thing it says " For your security, some settings are controlled by group policy".
A moderator in the other section suggested that something must have happened during the clean up process that changed some settings.... any help would be appreciated. thanks |

to get to group policy setting (assuming xp pro) start / run / type gpedit.msc / enter ....(not on my pro machine ....so ) think there is a security section ...you'd just have to look at each that might relate to the firewall and your choices are enable / disable / unassigned ....read the warning for each setting!!!

Okay, try the following:
Click START, then RUN, then type in: CMD (press enter). Now, type in exactly: netsh firewall show state (press enter). You should see something like this: Quote:
netsh firewall set opmode ENABLE (press enter). I can't remember, but either the firewall should now be enabled, or you should now be able to start the firewall. |

If this doesn't work, try: Click START, then RUN, then type in: rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf <----- press enter (or copy and paste). Reboot. Then Click START, then RUN, then type in CMD (press enter). NETSH FIREWALL RESET (press enter). Now, try to run the firewall applet, via control panel. This info was suggested by Matacumbie. |

Wow, you did what I posted in 7 minutes? Even with the reboot?
I'll look into this further, if you have the patience. Making dinner at 2348 right now. I will be back tomorrow. |

For the answer to this visit http://windowsxp.mvps.org/resetfwpol.htm. It states:
Method 1: For Windows XP Home and Professional Editions Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe Navigate to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ WindowsFirewall Backup the key and then delete the WindowsFirewall branch. Close Regedit.exe and restart Windows. |

After I deleted the Key in using regedit the problem persisted, I review the list of software installed in my PC and I found "Microsoft Protection Service", It was installed when I installed Windows Live OneCare, after unistalled Windows Live OneCare It stayed installed producing the problem.
I Unistalled this service and the problem was fixed. Thank You |
