Bypass net registration in HL2?

I dont know why, it worked fine when I was at home, but I cannot use the net registration for HL2/Steam, therefore I cant play the game (new laptop, old install was on the desktop back home).

It doesnt seem to be an actual verification problem but an internet problem. I am hooked up to a satellite/wireless net here in my room...but it just wont connect, or times out, etc.

I am in Afghanistan, dont really have too many options...surely there has to be a work around for this.
