Apparently, I have a trojan on my laptop that I've been unable to remove. It's causing browser windows to open up with ads, usually for some sort of antispyware program (most often winantispyware2007).

Yesterday I spent the day going through the "Read Me First" Guide. I've been through all the steps, the only problem being 6B. Although I've extracted both getrunkey and shownew files, when I double click on them, nothing happens. I'm sure you guys will need them, so any help getting those files to work would be appreciated.

In the meantime, I'm going to attach all of the other logs, in hopes that someone can analyse them for me and give me some advice for getting rid of this thing. Thanks in advance!

    Removing trojan

I just got an error message when I tried to upload my attachments (the manage attachment box was redirected to a spyware site when I was in the middle of uploading). It said "invalid thread". I tried to do it again, and was told that I'd already uploaded them here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=131346 which doesn't seem to exist (at least for me).

So, right now, I can't attach the logs because I already did in that invisible thread. Argh.

I'm attaching the HiJackThis log, since that wasn't included in the first post that I tried to make.

    Re: Removing trojan

You had made duplicate threads and they were getting merged back into one thread where they are now. All your posts for this problems belong in one thread. The reason it was initially invisible was because something in your post (probably the winantispyware text) was trapped by our spam filters. Your post then needed to be approved before it would appear.

Before continuing on to try and resolve the issues with GetRunKey and ShowNew, Run this Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Removal and do not attach the requested log right away. Run it multiple times until it comes up clean and then attach the final log.

    1. Now Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

See step 0 of the READ ME, you have some of the Viewpoint software listed in the things to uninstall list running. Uninstall it.

Yes I do need the logs from GetRunKey and ShowNew.
    • Did you check to see if you are getting any of the error messages mentioned on the download pages?
    • What folder did you extract them into? Give me the full path name.
    • Are you using a 64 bit version of Windows?
    • Do you know how to open a command prompt window and run programs from a command prompt?
Now attach the below NEW logs:
    • VundoFix
    • ComboFix
    • GetRunKey - if it worked
    • ShowNew - if it worked
    • HJT

    Thanks for your help.

I uninstalled the viewpoint that I missed earlier.

I was able to get the GetRunKey and ShowNew files to work. This time, when I clicked on them I got a window in the bottom right corner of my screen asking permission to run each of them. That window never appeared before, any of the other dozen times I tried it!

I ran vundo until it came up clean. I'm assuming it saves it's own log because I didn't see an option for that. I'm attaching the only one I could find on my computer (hopefully that's the most recent). I'll also attach combofix to this message and I'll attach the others to another post in a minute.

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to SymWMI Service
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteSymWSC into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.
Now run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Also uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now!

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1FA9237D-98F8-472A-948D-126415287CB1} - C:\Program Files\MSN\merox83122.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Okay, I've done all of the above. I don't seem to be getting any popup browsers now.

I haven't rebooted since running Avenger, so I'm not sure if the start up process has gotten any quicker (computer loaded very slowly when the malware was on there).

Attaching log files, please let me know if I need to run anything else or if I'm clean now.

Part of the Avenger procedure said:
You need to follow those directions and then tell me how things are working. Or did you mean that you did reboot after running Avenger but have not rebooted since getting the new logs?

  10. neracny

    neracny Private E-2

Yeah, I meant I restarted after running Avenger and let it do it's thing, didn't restart since getting the new logs.

Okay then your startup issues are not due to malware. They are due to what you have installed and are allowing to run at startup.

Here are a few examples which you need to investigate why you need them to be loading at startup:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD05] c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\{45B6180B-DCAB-4093-8EE8-6164457517F0}\hphupd05.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] "c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cpqset] C:\Program Files\HPQ\Default Settings\cpqset.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eabconfg.cpl] C:\Program Files\HPQ\Quick Launch Buttons\EabServr.exe /Start
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] "C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MimBoot] C:\PROGRA~1\MUSICM~1\MUSICM~1\mimboot.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DW4] "C:\Program Files\The Weather Channel FW\Desktop Weather\DesktopWeather.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ypager.exe -quiet
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MoneyAgent] "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyexpr.exe"
    O4 - Global Startup: NkvMon.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Nikon\NkView6\NkvMon.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE

I also recommend that you uninstall the below:
    • Ad-Aware 2007 - this is a resource hog that runs a service that will eat up tons of memory.
    • LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symantec Corporation) - you don't have any Symantec software installed so this is not needed.
    • Norton WMI Update - you don't have any Symantec software installed so this is not needed.
    • WildTangent Web Driver - WildTangent is stuff that has long been lumped into the malware area. It is more adware than anything.
    • Yahoo! Toolbar - do you really need this. It slows things down.
Do you use Musicmatch Jukebox? If not, uninstall it or at least stop it from loading at startup.

Okay, it's definitely loading faster than it was a few days ago (it was hanging at the desktop without any icons for a bit, but now it's okay). I took your advice and uninstalled/disabled some of those programs anyway.

Do the last logs I posted look clean?

  13. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

    Yes your logs were clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks so much. I'm going to go through those steps now.

One last thing.... can you point me to the where I can donate to keep your site up and running? You guys are awesome!
