Okay, I have been following the Malware Removal guide and know it said not to run the Getrunkey yet, but after it unzipped, I thought I still needed to install it....so well it ran in dos mode until I was able to stop it. I am not sure how much it did or where or what it did. How do I back up a step? Help me please. I am trying to get rid of the PWS.LDPinchIE trojan. What a nasty little worm!

Additionally, previous to going to your website, I had already run CCleaner. Somehow in running it I had managed to disable services like Windows Installer. When I came to the instructions in the Malware Removal Guide (MRG), to run ccleaner again, I assumed I would not need to do so since I had run it already. Is this correct? If not, would I have to take any additional steps to recover from running it already?

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

    Thanks.
    Dianne

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Just continue on with the steps and rerun GetRunKey.bat (and ShowNew.bat) when requested in step 6 which will just give you new logs at the correct time.

Yes you need to re-run a cleaning tool at the point where we requested it. Garbage piles up very quickly. However if you had problems with CCleaner and are worried about running it, just use the below procedure with ATF-Cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

I have finished the process of cleaning and running all of the steps in Malware Removal guidelines. Now I am attaching my log files. I do not know what virus or trojan I may be infected with. Whatever it is, it has disabled all of my internet icon viewing. I hope that these logs are valuable in discovering what it is. Thank you for such clear instructions and your time.

You forgot to attach the 6 requested logs! See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

The logs that were requested are:

    • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
    • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
    • Bitdefender - from step 6
    • Panda Scan - from step 6
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • HijackThis

  5. Dianne Harris

    Dianne Harris Private E-2

I am sorry. I thought I had attached at least 3 of the six files. Did they come attached or not? I have located the following files and will attach them after you confirm that these are the right ones.

Activescan.txt (is this the one from CounterSpy?
    bdscan.txt
    newfiles.txt
    runkeys.txt
    hijackthis.log

If you did not receive the first attachments, perhaps there was something interferring with my process (possibly lack of sleep!):zzz:zzz

No! You have not attached anything.

To get a CounterSpy log, you have to save one.

  7. Dianne Harris

    Dianne Harris Private E-2

I ran CounterSpy and I am pretty sure I saved one. It was late last night and I was sure I put it somewhere safe, but I am afraid I did not write down the location or the name.

Is it a default name for the file, or is it individual according to user. If I cannot locate it, can I repeat the steps from top to bottom or may I just run CounterSpy now out of sequence? I am sure this is a dumb question and I apologize. Please help.

I forgot to let you know that I have a network of 3 other computers that I am afraid this thing has also attacked.

I am waiting for your response. Thank you again.

The log file for CounterSpy will be whatever you named it and whereever you put it. Did it find anything? Did you have it fix the problems? You can run it again to be sure and make sure you save a log and know what it is named and where you put it so you can attach it. Run it in normal boot mode!

Are you going to start attaching the requested logs so we can get started?

Here are the first three files. I will be sending the next ones shortly. I reran CounterSpy and then saved the results to a txt file. I did not see anywhere in the program where I actually create a log other than copy and paste. I hope that this gives you the information that you need in order to assist me. Again, as ever, I am grateful for your help.

If the first three attachments did not come across, it was because I neglected to use the second submit reply button on this screen. I will resend them if I do not see them.

You Ignored everything CounterSpy found instead of Quarantining or Deleting. There is no sense in running the scans if you don't fix the problems they find. Since it really did not find any real big problems, you don't need to re-run it. We will fix things manually. In fact, since we are actually finished with CounterSpy, please uninstall it now before moving on to the below instructions.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
Now re-run ATF-Cleaner per my previous instructions on it

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I have removed CounterSpy, run HijackThis (system scan only), fixed the referenced lines, exited HJT, copied, pasted and saved as all files the fixme.reg file to the desktop. I ran it and got the following error:

Cannot import C:Documents and Settings\Dianne\Desktop\fixme.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

    Please advise.
    Thank you,
    Dianne

That means you did not follow the directions exactly as written. The file must be created and saved properly. You cannot have any blank lines above the REGEDIT4 line and you must make sure you have the REGEDIT4 line. Try it again.

Thank you so much for the hint about the blank line above REGEDIT4. I was copying your quote box to the nth degree and thought the blank line you showed was necessary. Removing it dit the trick. Now for the next question...

I have done the steps now through running ATF-Avenger. Your next steps say to send the new logs for Avenger and GetRunKey,ShowNew and HJT. Am I to assume that this means I must run these programs again? Your directions are a little confusing for me right here.

Shall I rerun GetRunKey and ShowNet and HJT?

Please help. The icons are all missing when I am on the internet. I am hoping that we will resolve this issue before we are finished.
    Thanks,
    Dianne

There was no blank line above the REGEDIT4 in my instructions. You just have to be careful while reading. It says copy the Bold text which starts at REGEDIT4

Yes! Otherwise you would be attaching old (the same) logs which would be rejected.

What do you mean by the icons are all missing when I'm on the internet?
Do you mean that your browser is not showing any graphics/images?

My mistake on the REGEDIT4 space thing....I was looking at the skinny little border above it and saw it as a blank space. I did not want to rerun the other files without directions to do so even though I knew you would be getting the same old stuff if I didn't. I learned a long time ago not to assume anything.

In regards to the icons being missing...yes I meant that the graphics were gone on all of my internet browsing. I had a revelation last night to check the tools on IE and found that they had been turned off. While this little varmit was running around in my machine, it had managed to disable a lot of things. Graphics was one of the first things to go and that was what caused me to be concerned about a virus. Then when I tried to run AVG checking for a virus, it would not load.

Here are 2 of the requested attached files. I look forward to having a clean machine. Thanks for your continued help.

I do not know what is happening here. In the manage attachments popup I am getting an upload error and the attachments are not going when I submit reply. I apologize for the repeated replys...but I need to send these files. Perhaps I will try to send them from another pc. Does that run the risk of infecting the additional pc? If the attachments are not on this submit, please help.

Just two more items to fix with HJT. Fix the below lines:

    O16 - DPF: {14C1B87C-3342-445F-9B5E-365FF330A3AC} -
    O16 - DPF: {6414512B-B978-451D-A0D8-FCFDF33E833C} (WUWebControl Class) -

Then just double check a new log yourself and make sure they are gone.

Other than that your logs are clean.

    Is everything working okay now?

Thank you. It appears as though my laptop is working well. I have a few quirks, but I think I caused them by changing some settings trying to "fix" things. Now it appears as though I may have transferred the bugs during my infection to the other computers in our network. Our business proprietary software is now acting strange. Since I have made it through cleaning my laptop, the other three computers ought to be simpler. One old pc is running Windows 98. Will I need to follow some different procedures for it? I imagine I will be sending some logs from them next week. Should I just continue with this same thread on Monday?

I am going to look back through all of these notes to see what my next step is. I remember I need to turn system restore back on and I think there were some other things too.

Thanks again. You have been a great help and this old grandma thanks you.

Well, I am back to ask a rather silly question...It appears that everything is fine...but how can I be "sure" that all malware is gone before I toggle system restore?

  23. chaslang

The same procedures apply. You will note in the READ ME there are certain exceptions for older OS's (like running SuperAntiSpyware instead of CounterSpy or AVG Antispyware). New PC or new problems, should be in a new thread.

Running thru the READ & RUN ME is you best assurance that you are clean. Is it 100% guaranteed.....no! There is no such thing unless you repartition, format and reinstall and make sure you reinstall only from original uninfected media and copies of all software.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
