I noticed that there were a number of files that are reported locked by the Kaspersky Online Scanner and that it skipped checking them because they are locked.

Are these files supposed to be locked and if not how does one go about unlocking them?

The "locked files" are not an issue. Are you having malware problems?
If so ....Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

I thought I was because My Internet connection slowly went from 4700/400 to 600/35.

I ran all the usual programs and everything was reporting a clean system and yet the system kept getting slower.

I even stuck the XP disk in and checked if all the protected files were ok.

Normally I run my AVG for anti virus and do a monthly with Trend Micro's Housecall. I seen the Kaspersky advertised here and decided to run that instead this time and it came up with the locked files. In the mean time I decided that I should try and see if the registry was ok and downloaded a couple of free trial programs and one found 53 problems fixed 3 and said buy me to fix the remaining 50. I then ran the other one (by PC Tools) and it found 185 Problems and fixed 40 and gave me the same buy me to fix the rest message.

I bought the PC Tools programs since it found more errors and after fixing the registry my internet speed went back up to normal. Somehow the registry got fubar-ed.

I then figured I'd ask about the locked files since I had never run in to that before. Its good to know they are normal.

    Thanks for your fast reply.

Not a problem ...though we usually don't recommend you purchase programs as there are plenty that are freeware and work as well. CCleaner in particular!

If you find you are having malware issues, we'll be here.:)

I have used CCleaner for years and never had a complaint with it, and in fact ran it several times during this problem. What ever was fixed by Registry Mechanic was something CCleaner was not finding. And to be honest I was first drawn to Registry Cleaner and Registry Mechanic by the "Free" advertisement. "Free" isn't free for those two, But it worked so I am happy.

Thanks, I have another question about a failed Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB928365) and am going to go find the right forum for that one.
