Becoming a "MAJOR GEEK"

Hello All,
I was just wondering if anyone has kept a record of the fastest jump in rank from Private E-2 to Major Geek? I noticed there is a member under 90 days from join date with only 14 posts to go.

 

Would that be Kestrel13! ? She was only about 13 posts away yesterday.

 

Why bother confused

 

Please don't get me wrong guys i am not bashing Kestrel13 or anyone else. I just thought it was amazing to amass that many posts in so short a time. It seems that in the last couple of months the amount of "MAJOR GEEKS" has grown considerably. This is one of the reasons i like coming here there is always a lot of action and helpful advice.

True, dat. Putting it this way, just looking at the numbers (like, who cares, anyway). 1,000 posts over 90 days only equates to 11-12 posts per day on average. Not a great deal when you break it down. I've made a little over 6,100 posts (6,108, at time of posting), but it's taken me over five years, lol - and I've always been a (semi)regular.

And if ya don't ask, or enquire about things, your learning curve is likely to be real slow.

 

Numbers and obscure facts is what makes being a geek cool. :cool

 

Yeah, but only the ones that are actually of at least, a little interest. Sorry, but post counts just don't do it for me. But, whatever floats your boat, I suppose.

 

@Phantom..no post counts don't do it for me either, but everyone has an interest in something and it is kinda interesting that someone got that, many that quick, just by being curious and wanting to learn instead of spamming

 

I love helping out Emma, and trying to double-guess her next question before she asks it. .

IMO her PC knowledge is growing by leaps and bounds and if you don't ask, you don't get answers.

Hell, I am still learning being a newbie Broadband user.

how many different ranks are there. and what do you have to do to get them.i am still new to all this but really do like this site. my comp would be dead if it was nt for peeps on here.

Some of us here cannot work for a variety of reasons, through no fault of our own and this site is very helpful in keeping us in touch with the world as well as having an opportunity to learn more about computers by posting questions here

 

I honestly can not understand why someone would even mention how many replies someone has, it isn't as though you get paid for it.

 

I'm a rooting for you Emma.

Major Geeks is here to help people.........and each other. I discover something new everyday, I appreciate anyone who is willing to help me and others learn or solve a problem. This is a great site!

I guess when we "know it all" we won't need this place, but until then we can hang around here with our helpful friends and learn. :wave

well said Steve i wholly agree.

i think the problem is some of the junior members attach a status to the number of posts you have,for me it's just the pleasure of being able to ask about problems and very raerly to give a little bit of help to another.

my ambition is to catch HALO with more than 20000 but i dont think i will live that long:cry:cry

so lighten up guys and don't be jelouse of a really enthousiastic member who is just trying to learn.

Sometimes you're the questioner, sometimes you're the answerer, and sometimes your the practicing PITA. Me, I've been all 3.

 

In my two cents.... I think its great to ask questions, great way to learn - you can never stop learning!

Although I'm not much of a contributor (I surely dont have half the knowledge others have) - I've learned a whole lot from reading the questions and answer of others.

So, Kes - Keep it up girl! Ask as many questions as they can tolerate LOL

 

It most likely will take me 20-30 years to make a rank of Major Geek, as I.m a reader and not a poster.

 

I was a bit slow with that one Bill it took me a while to work out what PITA was but it has just clicked and yep thats me as well.

 

I honestly didn't see that comment as a dig at anyone, but just a comment of one person's observation (and possibly envy).

We all have different walks of life and we are all at different points in our walk of life. Some of us have no choice but to be at home, often through little choice of our own; some of us are at work all day and have the 'luxury' of being at a computer through our work; others are full-time parents; others are students; other are unable to even leave the house very easily or at all and have taken time to learn and share their understanding of computers through this forum, as well as a positive social outlet through the shoutbox - many, many different reasons. None of them right, none of them wrong, but for whatever reason we are all here when we choose to be, and that is a personal choice. No one can sit in judgment on your reasons as no one else is having to live the life you are. If they do, that judgment is uninformed and, let's face it, worthless.

So let's not go there and give it mileage

I was just realizing that. I am going through some of my old subscribed threads looking for a certain fixed problem to link and all of them were unanswered after giving a fix, that may have or may have not worked for them.. rolleyes

I have stayed out of things since i started this and wish i had NOT. I would like to thank HALO and Big Bazza for realizing that i had no malicious intent!
I just thought i would open a discussion on the topic. If you will notice i called no names or presented any profiles that should give anyone a feeling of malcontent. I did answer up for myself in my second post when i said:

That's true, I have given my thanks and left (not just here) purely out of frustration and embarrassment.
Some techs are sooo techy, talk to you on their level as if you should understand.

 

i am guilty of that. usually though, if i dont get back its because it DID work.
