CD player works great...except for music

Neither of my 2003 WindowsXP CD-ROM and a CD/RW-ROM drive will play audio cds (music), though both will play non-music CDS. Have tried different age CDs (I've heard that newer CDs may be coded) without success. Pop in CD, CD drive starts to run, then just stops dead. Ran troubleshooter on one of the drives and it says there are no problems. (I guess that's just a matter of definition, then <g>.) Not sure if this is a hardware issue or a software issue -- when I got Verizon Yahoo, of course it came with its own music SW, and there are a couple other ones in the computer as well. Thinking that maybe the computer couldn't tell which program to run, I've uninstalled some of them but still no go -- and at this point I don't know what's in there or how to find what's in there. Suggestions? Thanks!

First, Welcome!!! I think you find this place helpful :)

Second, Im sorry you have verizon (maybe you like them tho). I have them and I (and others I know) think verizon really sucks and there help is really.. not helpful.. lol

Third, your problem - try going into the control panel>system>hardware>device manager>sound, video and game controllers and look and see if there is anything that has a red x or a yellow exclamation point?

also has the drive ever worked? (for cd's) or did it just stop when you got verizon? i dont know what kind of computer you have but have you trying going to the website (i have a dell so i would go to dell's) and update your audio drivers?

Is this a home built computer?
Is it a mass produced one?

This sounds to me like they didn't hook the analog wire from the back of the cd-rom into the soundcard. This would cause no sound to be played from the cd drive. Easy fix for this. Go to device manager, go to DVD/CD-rom drives, find your drive. Double click it, go to properties. Under digital cd playback make sure the box is checked to enable digital cd playback.

Thank you; I'm never crazy about the "packages" so I only am using my Firefox browser and not Verizon Yahoo; I'm checking and cleaning my emails before I download them (to avoid those spam pdfs and other emails that appear to come from me but really don't -- their spam filter could use some work) and trying hard to ignore all the other stuff. I did manage to stop the IM Program from loading every time I boot up but I couldn't tell you how I did it! OTOH, I get TV and phone and internet for one mid-size to large price over FIOS. Even if I dropped Verizon, I'd still have to pay someone for that.

No yellow exclamation points or red exes.

I'm not sure when it stopped working ... just one day I went to put in The Three Tenors or Carlos Nakai and zip, null, nada on the sound side.

I couldn't figure out on the dell site where to download the audio driver; I'll keep poking around though and if I get really really stuck, I'll come back and beg for a hyperlink! (I have a stubborn streak that means I do actually try to figure things out -- keeps the brain in working order and never mind the butter leaking out of the ears. <g>

    Dear Ironsnipe

Thank you for your response. This is a mass-produced Dell, 2003. I checked the properties and the digital CD playback already enabled, but ... it still won't go.

When I put in a disk, the little light under the drive bay blinks on and off, there is an initial spin-up, then nothing ... I've even checked to see if I muted anything just in case I was that foolish, but no.

    Yes, the speakers were off.

Why is it just when one gets all riled up one finds out the mistake is one's own??

    sigh.:duck

After You Have Made Sure Speakers Are On,Try Playing A cd Then If It Don't Work Reinstall The Drivers For The CD-Rom & If That Don't Work Get A New Or Different CD-Rom. Sounds Like The Cd Rom May Be Bad.
