Very slow Network with Wireless modem

I have a home network setup with a Linksys WRT54G for the access to the network for 2 remote computers. This computer is hardwire to one of the ports on the back of the modem. I thought at first I had a Virus or some such problem but after doing every check in the book and then some I was able to determine this system is clean of all the little bugs.

I then downloaded(Purchased) a Registry Cleaner (yes I did CCleaner first) and used it. For all of 1 day things went back to normal and My DL/UL 4785/365 through DSLReports speed test sites. Then the next time I booted it was back to a blazing 28K on the DL. I ran all the test again including CCleaner and the purchased Reg Cleaner and nothing improved.

I then remembered that just about the time all this started my Grandson had a friend come over and do something to his computer to help speed up his system. I thought maybe they had installed some sort of program that was sucking all the bandwidth, (don't even know if there is such a thing). So I logged in to the modem and shut his system down and nothing changed. Tonight I decided to try bypassing the Wireless modem alltogether and hooking my system up direct and the speed was back up where it should be. Yet the 2 systems on the wireless his was never having a slow down but the other one on wireless was but not as badly as mine (the host)

Are there any tools to determine if the modem is bad or going bad?
Might there actually be some sort of program a user on your network can use to command all the bandwidth?
If it is time for a new wireless modem what do you guys think of the new Linksys "N" modem?

What you call Modem is actually called Wireless Cable/DSL Router.

Since you wired computer is OK your modem is OK.

If possible takt the Wireless computer and plug them with a Wire to the Router, if the Speed is OK than it might be Wireless problem if it is Not OK through Wireless than it is the computer.

cCleaner and Reg Cleaners do not clean spyware and Viruses, you might still have a problem with Internet Junk.

    Otherwise try this process, http://www.ezlan.net/clean.html#refreshnet

Sorry for not being complete, I first went to the Malware section and downloaded and followed all the instructions for cleaning Malware off my system, not just the Reg cleaners. I only mentioned those because when I ran Registry Mechanic it cleaned an additional 180+ problems that CCleaner did not find and for a short time seemed to solve the problem. After the next reboot everything went back to crap.

I downloaded some of those programs you linked to as they were not included in the Malware section. I will run those and see if they find anything or if there is any change in the system.

    Thanks for your reply.

While I down loaded the lsp and winsock programs I only ran the Process Scan. It did not show anything running that was not supposed to be running. Since there appears to be nothing wrong with My Winsock or lsp I did not run those. The wireless router seems to be the problem. It is strange that I (since I was hard wired to it) was having problems when the Grandson who is connected via a Linksys WUSB54GP was having no problem. The wifes computer which is also connected via a Linksys WUSB54GP, was also having less than normal speeds.

This was why I asked about any possibility of some sort of program he might be running. But since that seems impossible and it does seem to be the router is failing, is also why I asked about how people felt about the new "N" wireless from Linksys as if I have to buy a new one I might as well look in to getting the "N" type if it is a good as they claim.

I just went out today and bought the Linksys Wireless N WRT300N since it seemed to be obvious that it was failing.

What a difference on the 2 wireless computers. Previously had to use a G range extender to even connect to them and they would only get around 40 % signal strength and about 51MBps at best. This new set up with just the Router and USB antenna gets 270 MBps and 95% signal strength. What a huge difference in speed and signal strength. (Easy setup too).
