hi, you guys helped me out last year (which i really appreciate).

for some reason, Firefox kept crashing on me so I used Internet Explorer as my browser for a day and ended up with viruses/Trojans.

i went thru all of the steps in the Read This First thread, in order. the only scan that wouldn't complete was the online Panda scan. for some reason it would get to a certain point and then IE would just close. i tried it 5 times and it just keeps doing the same thing. after the second time, i checked to see if i had the latest JRE, which i didn't. i uninstalled the previous version and then installed the new version (v6 update 2) from the link you provided. it still won't complete. confused

i've attached my logs. please have a look when you get a chance. i will be patient. :p

    thank you!!

You are not using copies of GetRunKey and ShowNew from the current READ ME. You are way out of date. Download and use the current versions from now on. Don't attach new logs yet until doing the below.

First you need to re-run ConterSpy and this time Quarantine or Delete what it finds. There is no sense in running the scans if you are going to Ignore what they find. Save a new log and attach it where requested below.

    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. CounterSpy
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT
    5. the ComboFix log
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Ugh... such newbie mistakes. sorry to waste your time.

here are the logs you requested.

computer seems to be running progressively slower. apps are taking a long time to start, i get the flashlight for a few seconds when i open My Computer... everything seems delayed for a few seconds.

i quarantined and then deleted the files from CounterSpy this time. ;)

one issue that i had with ComboFix was when it was running, i started getting suspicious software activity alerts for Smitfraud_downloader or something like that, so i selected 'Always Remove' from the Trend Micro pop-up alert. ComboFix started telling me 'Access Denied', 'File not found', etc. I tried to un-quarantine 'Smitfraud' as i figured it was part of ComboFix (or the alert false-positived it as Smitfraud) but PC-cillin didn't seem to Restore it or take it off the list. I shut off PC-Cillin and CounterSpy and ran ComboFix again and it worked. apologies if this is covered somewhere and i missed it.

thanks again for your help. hopefully i did everything right.

    Update:

i was running the computer in Safe Mode with networking. while using Firefox, i kept getting pop-up ads for 'Scan Your PC' etc. when i clicked 'cancel' it still opened up the window. if i used Program Manager to manually shut down the ad, it shut down all of Firefox. so the next time i launched Firefox, i just let the windows open and left them alone.

after a few minutes, the PC just shut off. i turned it back on and got an error before boot that said something like "Intel CPU_x load code error" or something like that and "Press F1 to continue". i was writing it down when the machine shut off again.

i am now working from my laptop.

2nd update: i restarted my PC in Safe Mode and it started up no problem. no error this time. i've been having problems with a flaky CPU fan (got a fan error yesterday, but it's working now). Since PC-cillin and CounterSpy can't run in Safe Mode, should i be running in Normal mode until we can get this fixed? thanks...

Actually you ignored Bearshare which is bundled with malware. You need to uninstall this program and not use it anymore. Then you should re-reun CounterSpy again and if it finds more stuff from Bearshare, Quarantine it. Attach another new log from CounterSpy.

Don't worry about speed problems until you are clean and I have had you uninstall any unnecessary stuff we installed to fix your PC.

You did not install and run both GetRunKey and ShowNew as requested on the download pages. You must follow the directions there and extract all files from the ZIP files and make sure you do not try to run the programs from inside of the ZIP file. Also check to see if you get any of the error messages mentioned. Re-attach new logs from them.

I cannot work up a full fix until I get proper logs.

    Cheese and Crackers!! :cry

Bearshare is not installed. the setup program is on my desktop. it has been there for over a year and has never been opened, and has never caused any problems. you mentioned this the last time i had a virus. i am ok with Bearshare's un-executed crap-ware.

as far as ShowNew and RunKeys, i looked at the difference between the previous files that i attached and the new files attached and can see that the directory where the files are located now exists within the logs. part of the problem is that when i find the downloaded files via your instructions (right-click on Start, Explore to find files, double click file to run) the file doesn't 'run'. it opens up a zip folder. i ended up copying the contents of the zip folder(s) to new folders.

i really appreciate your time. i'm not trying to give you bad logs or anything, but i have seriously spent days scanning this machine now. i've attached new runkeys and shownew. i am not worried about Bearshare. will that be acceptable?

    thanks.

ok, here's the latest CounterSpy log. i deleted all the Bearshare stuff, too.

last night (before the attached CounterSpy scan) i jumped ahead a little and used the removal instructions for VundoFix and that seems to have solved my problem. i'd like to know if there are any residual traces of anything else in there. specifically, there is a registry pointer to a file 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkkkhf.dll'.

i've attached the VundoFix log and the most recent HiJack this log.

    thanks.

That is exactly what is supposed to happen. ZIP files don't run. They must be opened using a ZIP file extraction utility and one is built into Windows XP by default. It is rather limited but it does work. And what you did by removing the files from the ZIP and into their own folder is basically what was requested (i.e., extract the files into their own folder).

Okay uninstall the CounterSpy trial program since we are finished with it now and it has removed what we wanted to remove. Do this now before continuing.

You should delete the below files wasting over 1.5 Gig of diskspace
    Code:
    "C:\"
    1ba.tmp Jul 27 2007 50332160 "1BA.tmp"
    1e5.tmp Jul 27 2007 50332160 "1E5.tmp"
    266.tmp Jul 27 2007 50332160 "266.tmp"

Now continue by downloading a tool we will need

    - Process Explorer

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    vsdcpneh.dll
    geebb.dll
    jkkkkhf.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    vsdcpneh.dll
    geebb.dll
    jkkkkhf.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    vsdcpneh.dll
    geebb.dll
    jkkkkhf.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2AF4E144-B739-4107-884C-49C94F797902} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geebb.dll (file missing)

The below is a Remote Control background application for CyberLink's PowerDVD which enables you to use a remote control with your DVD drive if your drive came with one. Not required if you don't have a remote control, or don't wish to use one. Have HJT fix this line if you don't use a Remote Control.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RemoteControl] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink DVD Solution\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe"

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkkkkhf - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jkkkkhf.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtutq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutq.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

ok, did everything you said (except uninstall CounterSpy before i did everything else - sorry, me no read so gud  - but it is set to uninstall next time i reboot. right now, system is back to normal operating speed.

    a few notes:

    - Firefox doesn't work. i get a message that Fx can't connect to Google. tried other sites, same message 'cant connect'. could the viruses/spyware have disabled Firefox? i would much rather be using Fx than IE (IE is how i got these problems in the first place).

    - IE does work (using it now). before i performed all the fixes above, when i started IE, my PC-Cillin popped up and told me that it was taking me to a spyware site (browser hijack or proxy, i guess) but the displayed page was just Google. i quickly shut down the modem and closed IE. i ended up downloading the programs you told me to by using my laptop, then burning a CD and transferring the files to my PC.

    - when i was 'taking matters into my own hands' i downloaded and ran Killbox, so some of the files that you wanted to delete with Avenger were not there to be deleted. there seem to be some backup files from Killbox with names of some of the files you wanted to delete. should i just delete all Killbox-related files?

    - i was having some other serious problems with my PC which is why it has taken me so long to finally get all of this done. basically what was happening was my computer was freezing up right after Windows started. then i got all kinds of errors (CPU fan, overclocking failed, etc.) at first i thought it was a coincidence (when it rains, it pours...) but all of these problems seemed to magically disappear once i started doing the cleaning. again, maybe coincidence. i don't know...

    - any other files that i should delete?

    - should i run some more scans to be absolutely sure all the bad stuff is gone?

here are the logs you requested. thanks again!

Make sure it uninstalls and that all lines for it in your HJT log go away. These are the lines:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SBCSTray] C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\SBCSTray.exe
    O23 - Service: Sunbelt CounterSpy Antispyware (SBCSSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\SBCSSvc.exe (file missing)

Uninstall your old version of FireFox and then reboot. Don't skip the reboot. The download the current version here: Mozilla Firefox Install this and see if things work now.

Yes you can delete these now.

    Yes this one:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjg.dll

Not necessary. Just do the above and then move on to the below if you are not having any other malware issues.

It is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
