I ran through the entire process of removing malware and deleted a ton of viruses and spyware. The minute I logged in normally, though, to run HijackThis Windows Defender prompted me with a trojan virus and asked me to remove it.
Not only this, but whenever I open iTunes or FireFox, and IE browser pops up with annoying ads.
Please offer any help that you can offer.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You need to first go back and follow the instructions in step 3 of the READ ME. You have both AVG7 and Sophos Antivirus installed. You must uninstall one of these now!!!

Then uninstall Viewpoint Media Player as requested in step 0 of the READ ME.

Then uninstall the below old Sun Java versions as requested in step 6 of the READ ME.
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 5 SDK

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

If you need the Sun Java Development kit you can get it here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
    4. the ComboFix log
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thank you for your help.
Sorry for not uninstalling those few programs.

I ran the programs you gave me and am posting the logs. I no longer get those pop-ups, but Windows Defender says there is a Trojan:Win32\Virtumonde.O at the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpo.dll and it can not get rid of it.

Other than that, everything appears fine. The logs might say otherwise, though, and this is what I'm betting on.
Thank you again for all of your help.

Did you install the below applications?
O23 - Service: Routing and Remote Access RemoteAccessTrkWks (RemoteAccessTrkWks) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\acluit.exe (file missing)
    O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - Unknown owner - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" -d -f "%ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.ini (file missing)

WinPcap is often installed when Ethereal is installed and I don't see Ethereal installed.

First uninstall CounterSpy since we are finished with this trial program now. Do this before you continue with the below!

Now run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {54EFD4FD-C84D-4B9D-8D9C-CB0BA8EE822B} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {58C95C83-A0BD-41ED-8DFC-09C54E00C210} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpo.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9E294763-13A4-4084-972D-E8B0C74F69D9} - (no file)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Red Swoosh] C:\Program Files\RSSoft\RedSwoosh.exe /S
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/menusearch.jhtml?p=ZJfox000
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkhff - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhff.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqpo - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpo.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: sstqq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstqq.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I did not install those applications, nor did I install Ethereal.

HijackThis ran without error. Avenger threw a couple of exceptions my way in alert window form, I clicked "try again" and it did nothing, so I clicked "continue."

Everything appears ok, but, again, the logs might say otherwise.

Then uninstall this WinPcap 3.1 beta3

    And do the below too.

    Delete this file: C:\-2063969965

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Routing and Remote Access RemoteAccessTrkWks
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteRemoteAccessTrkWks into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT and reboot when it tells you it needs to.

After reboot delete the below file if found:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\acluit.exe

Attach a new HJT log now!

    How is everything working?

Thank you so much for your help. Everything appears to be working beautifully.

Hopefully my malware is gone now, though.

After HijackThis deleted the NT Service, the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\acluit.exe was not there.

Again, thank you for your help.

    You're welcome.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I do have one final question... how did you know what to look for? I would like to learn this process and the files and things to delete so that I might be able to help someone out sometime. Do you have a tutorial that you could direct me to so that I can learn this process?

Your knowledge in this area truly astounded me, you see. I am a Computer Engineering and Computer Science major at a University and would love to learn how all of this works. Any help you can offer (names of websites, books, etc.) would be much appreciated.

Lots of experience from DOS days thru all Windows OS's. ;)

There are no easy tutorials for this. You need to know quite a bit about the Windows OS and file systems and its processes and what they do and how things work. Then you also need to learn about the literally thousands of infections that exists and what they do to a PC, how to recognize them and how to remove them. One of the best resources you have is this forum and others like it. You can learn an incredible amount by reading the messages, learning the procedures, seeing what works and what doesn't work for various infections. See what we do when a particular fix fails to work.... Be careful with some forums that do not have properly trained people helping. You easily be able to recognize forums like this where people are just guessing and throwing things out to try without really knowing what the problems are. Also you can ask questions in the forums and learn too. We try to answer everything in the Malware Forum but removing malware keeps us incredibly busy. The other tech forums at Majorgeeks are great resouces too (like the Software, Hardware, & Networking Forums).

Do a little research for books on the Windows Registry, you may find one to of some help but again you can also learn alot in Tech Forum like here. Also you can obviously learn alot thru the search engines (like Google, Yahoo, Excite). But again, be careful since not everything you read will be correct. You have to experiment on your own.

Speaking of experimenting, setup a PC that you use just to get infections and then learn how to remove them without having to format and reinstall. ;)
