    Windows XP Sp2 and IE7

After August updates a few days ago I am unable to go into Yahoo past the main page. It stalls. It does it with other programs like trying to download from MG I get to the page to download and I hit the tab but nothing happens or a blank white page comes up.

IE7 starts up with a home page of runonce.msn.com and a blue screen. I am unable to change the home page to google in internet options.

I have tried everything I know for 2 days.

Can you go back to an earlier restore point from before your MSN update? See if that gets rid of the problems.

The msn runonce can happen on the install of IE7 if you didnt go through the user experience stuff and also if you did and had something like Spybot blocking changes to the registry.

you can get around that poping up by opening notepad and pasting the below in

then save it with this name ie7runfix.REG then double click the registry file adn when the prompt asks to merge do so, then try IE7 again, you should be able to set your Homepage now.

*Remember to also backup any important docs beforehand*

Do I reply to each reply via the quote or just reply to thread. I am still kind of a newbee.

    Anyway.
    (1) When I hit restore system I just get a white blank screen. I also noticed below system restore an IE icon that says (no-add-ons) so when I go to IE7 and hit Internet options and hit enable or disable add ons it won't go any further. So I can't even dnld yahoo toolbar because when I get to the dnld bar in anything that is as far as I am allowed to go. So I also am not able to reinstall IE7.

    (2) I did not just install IE7. It was working fine untill the upgrade.

Do you mean to download Windows Registry Guide? That is the only software I find in Majorgeeks. If not could you explain this prceedure a little more.

I have the file ready to go but am not clear what to do with it.

No need to download any guides, just open notepad, paste the quoted text in my post above and goto file > save as and call the file ie7runfix.reg to save it as a registry file.

then just double click the file and at the prompt to merge with the registry click yes, this will add those registry keys and turn off the runonce page your getting for IE7.

Sorry to bother again but I am able to complete all but this part=goto file > save as and call the file ie7runfix.reg to save it as a registry file.

It saves as a txt file and I can't dble click to add it to the registry.
    Please help.

I saved the file in notepad but when I double clik on it , it just opens. Don't know what to do next or how to install it in the registry.

Meanwhile, now I can't even read email on yahoo it brings up the email with address etc. but the page is blank? Also,I still can't go into a website from IE7 past 2 clicks. Before each of the two clicks it says "your brouser settings prevent you from being automatically redirected to another URL please click below. After this shows for 2 seconds it proceeds to the next window of a site but will only do this two deep into a site.

I am about ready to re-install everything from scratch. Sorry to go on & on.
I feel like I am supposed to get tired and say oh! well might as well upgrade to Vista. If I did I probably would have the same problems just a new system to get used to with them. Thanks for listening.

    Hi

Is this your personal home PC or a work/company PC, I'm just as king sa the IT security for th enetwork maybe blocking redirects.

What security software do you have installed?

    Try the below:

    1. Delete all your cookies and temp files ( this will result in you having to retype any saved user/passwords that were saved for automatic logon to websites to be removed, so you will have to type them again ) download and install this and run the cleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

    2. Your Security and Privacy maybe set too High. Go to IE7 > Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Slider bar to Medium High > Apply > OK ( or even Medium )

    3. Have you scanned your PC for virii and malware?

the Registry file for the runoncemsn issue is attached, download and right click > Merge it, if it doesnt work, then you may have more issues than just settings.

Edit: ooops forgot reg files are not allowed to be attached, its now in a zip

Just in case, go to the link below and go over the steps in How to Make a .Reg File carefully, it includes screenshots that might help you in case you are missing something in Halo's instructions. Pay special attention to #5 and the screenshot.

It is my home computer. Thanks for the file. Your right I have more problems, so I am going through the malware removal guide from MG and then I am going to do a recover.

Even when I do a search with windows I get the dog at the bottom but it is blank above the dog. Whew! I am learning alot with the problem. That is the positive part.

Before I do a recover, I am running every freeware registry prgm just for experience. Thanks everyone.

One question about Malware Removal Guide. When I went throught I did not do every line of Steps on the special removal proceures. Did I skip something that was vital?

    Hi

Its worth doing all of the special removal guide, but those steps are helpful if you know the type of infection you have first, whereas the main READ ME http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 is the one to fully complete and attach the logs for, as this after the malware folk have looked at the logs can determine the type of infection accuratly.

Good one to read now as you have re-installed your OS is this one How to Protect yourself from malware! as it has many steps to keep you as safe as possible.
