I'd recommend installing the FasterFox, and Ad Block Plus extensions.

First is to tweak settings for performance, second is to keep ads from tying up your bandwidth.

By default, it is set to the most aggressive (default) options. You could play about in the 'Custom' setting to see if you can do any better, and you can also enable 'Enhanced Prefetching', to make it silently download any links.

Yes. This will load pages linked to from the page you're currently viewing into cache, so when you actually click that link, everything is already downloaded, and Firefox can load it from your hard drive, as opposed to going out on the internet, thus saving time.

Assuming you haven't hidden the timer in the bottom left:

    1. Launch Firefox
    2. Right-click timer
    3. Select 'Options'
    4. On the 'Fasterfox - Options' dialog, select the 'Fasterfox' tab
    5. Check the box next to 'Enable Enhanced Prefetching'
    6. Press the 'OK' button

If you have hidden the timer, steps 4-6 are the same, but you would access the dialog by doing the following:

    1. Launch Firefox
    2. Select 'Add-ons' from the 'Tools' menu
    3. Highlight the 'Fasterfox' add-on
    4. Press the 'Options' button
