I can't seem to get localsrv.net and Powered by ZEDO ads to quit popping up. I've read several of the other threads that you guys have related to those and it seems that many of them are individually specific. So I ran all the steps in the Read and Run Me First post and I believe that I have all of the logs that should be posted. I'll attach them and hopefully you guys can help me out. Seems as though you've been able to help with the others so hopefully you can help me too.

    Thanks

Here are the other logs that are requested. Thanks again.

Let me know if you need anything else.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the directions in step 2 of the READ ME properly. You did not do exactly what was requested. Then continue on to the below.

Also you forgot to attach the requested log from CounterSpy! Please attach it.

I'm going to post two sets of instructions below. Each will be enclosed in separate Quote boxes. Make sure to complete the first one 100% before moving on to the second one.

ATTACH THE FIRST LOG NOW BEFORE CONTINUING OR YOU WILL OVERWRITE IT!!!! And then immediately continue on to the below steps.

    Now attach new logs from:
    • GetRunKey
    • ShowNew
    • HJT
    How are things working now?

    Chas,

Thanks for your help with this issue, it is greatly appreciated.

Dangit, I knew that I couldn't have done all the steps right. I redid Step 2 to show hidden and system files per the request.

I couldn't find the Counterspy log that you requested but I can tell you that when I ran it the only thing that was found was Weatherbug. Hopefully that will help.

I'm attaching the 1st rapport.txt file and will continue with the 2nd step after I post this reply.

Thanks again for all of your help.

That's because we are not finished yet! ;)

Get started with the below while I look thru all of your logs.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.\

Now let's remove a couple of services.
    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Content Monitoring Tool
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Now repeat the above to Stop and Disable the below two Services (if you do not find them or get any errors, just continue):
      • Microsoft Sata emulation
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/paste msCMTSrvc into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now repeat the above to delete the below two Services (if you do not find them or get any errors, just continue):
      • mside
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that in my next message after running HJT again to fix some other items.

Sunbelt CounterSpy <--- we are finished with it now!

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Chas,

Thanks for your replies. I am having difficulty finding out how to remove the items in my Norton Antivirus quarantine. I recently upgraded to Norton 360 and I can't figure out how to delete the items in quarantine. I've searched through all of the help files and done numerous google searches, but can't find anything. I even tried going thought Norton support, but they want $100 so that one of their consultants can run an analysis on my machine rather than answering the one question that I asked.

Do you know how to remove quarantined items from Norton Antivirus in Norton 360? Does anybody really? I know that I sure don't.

Since I don't use any of their products and would not, I cannot properly answer that but I would bet there is an option somewhere possibly a right click type option on the tray icon or similar.

Another option would be to go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine

And then just manually delete all the junk being saved.

I'll just use your other option and delete all of the stuff in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine folder and continue from there. I've already been on Norton's chat tech support for two hours trying to get them to tell me how to do it, when I could have just asked you and got a good answer in 5 minutes.

I guess that just goes to show you that majorgeeks.com support >>>>>>>> Symantec Norton Support.:)

Thanks! We always thought so too but we are prejudice! ;)

Does the below work for Norton 360? This was how Norton 2006 worked:
    1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
      • If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program and click Norton AntiVirus.
    2. In the left pane, click Reports.
    3. Click View Norton Quarantined and Restore.
    4. In the left pane, select the type of risk that you want to remove.
    5. In the right pane, select the files that you want to remove.
    6. Click Delete Item.
    7. When you see the message "Warning! Are you sure that you want to remove this item from Quarantine," click Yes.
    8. Close the Quarantine window, and then exit Norton AntiVirus.
Or how about running Norton AntiVirus and trying the below:
    • From the Tools menu, select Quarantine. If the Quarantine window appears continue.
    • To permanently remove the infected file or group of files from your computer, highlight the files and click the Delete button.

Unfortunately none of those are valid ways to get to the quarantine in Norton 360. I talked to the technical support people and they say that there is no way to remove quarantined items from Norton Antivirus in Norton 360. I told them that that was stupid and sent them an email that said it should be included in a future release of Norton 360. Who knows if anything will come of it though.

I went ahead and completed all of the other steps that you requested in Post 9 with no other problems. I also haven't received a pop-up since after running HJT and Avenger. Didn't receive anything weird when installing Sun Java and haven't seen anything at all while I'm posting this. I am attaching the Avenger log, the RunKey log, and the ShowNew log to this message. I'll attach the HJT log to the next post, but from my end things look much better.

Thanks again for all of your help. You guys at majorgeeks.com are truly doing the internet world a GREAT service by providing this kind of help and support. You should all be commended for all of the hard work that you put in and especially for putting up with people like me who can't ever seem to do anything right the first time or are always making things hard than they seem.

    Thanks again.

The best way to get a reaction from them is to tell them you are going to uninstall it and not use it anymore since it obviously did not protect you anyway.

We have a few more things to delete.

    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
Now attach a new log from ShowNew.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I told them that I would not be repurchasing Norton 360 once my subscription was up and that I would no longer buy any Norton products and that seemed to perk them up a little bit, but I don't think that anything will get done.

Anyway.......new avenger and ShowNew logs attached.

    Thanks again!

No it probably will not result in any change but if everyone would do this, they would get the message. You don't need to wait. You can uninstall this massive resource hog and use very good free tools which you will see in my link in the below steps. If you do decide to get rid of Norton now, make sure you get it completely uninstalled before installing a new antivirus. Norton can be as difficult to remove as malware.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
