Read of majorgeeks spyware tutorial, and download and install the free programs, and then you should remain spyware free. When I run the programs, even months later, I rarely find any spyware that's a threat.

    * AntiVir Personal Edition 7 for Win9x/ME
    * PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition - forWin 2K/03/XP/Vista

These are better than Symantec/Norton or McAfee because they are free and because they are not so system resource hungry. The recent versions of Symantec/Norton and McAfee have become very bloated. This does not mean they do not work. If you have either of them and are happy with it, stick with them. But whatever you choose remember to Only Run ONE AV!

However below is a tool meant to complement your antivirus program and makes a great addition:

    * a-squared (a²) Free edition( if u use this beeee careful)

You are referring to antivirus programs when Chey was asking about antispyware programs. They are not the same. It would also be better to give the full link to what you were quoting from. The link is this: How to Protect yourself from malware! But Chey did say Norton in the first message so perhaps we need to really understand whether Chey is looking for an antispyware program or an antivirus program or both.

Chey, you don't need to buy anything but if you want to know which commercial antispyware program has typically performed the best, it was/is Spy Sweeper. However many commercial antispyware programs are starting to follow the trends of antivirus companies like Norton and McAfee and are starting to get a little to bloated and resource hungry. This can cause dramatic slow downs on your PC. Check out the How to protect yourself link and the free tools listed. They are quite good. Remember though, you are the most important item in your protection. Stay away from Internet Security Suites from any company! They will bring your PC to a crawl.

yes i just meant is that what u were asking about

i did all the steps from the read and run my first thread and i installed asquared and deleted everything it brought up

    No problems:)

my parents finally let me clean out there computer

and i ran a squared assuming nothing would go wrong and apparently i deleted a file windows needed and i had to go through so much hassel and ended having o boot from the cd and reload the drivers and stuff but it messed up my keyboard and mouse so i was kinda hard

so i'm just saying make sure you know what your deleting

    thats all:)

dont want anyone to go through what i did

espically since my parents dont normally trust me with comps and then this happens:p

    it's all good now tho

ok guys, please dont laugh, i am a novice here, but i have finally got rid (i think) of two virus' - i scanned with Counterspy and it found killreg trojan and a trojan downloader - autoclk, it found them and i have quarantined them, do i totally get rid of them now? Also, can i now be assured that my p.c. is clean and safe to use for things like e-bay and viewing my bank account online? Please have patience, I am self taught on the comp and find it all very confusing. Also can i use counter spy as an antivirus from now on as its the only thing that seems to have worked?

    Thanks

First, we are not allowed to diagnose Malware issues in the software forum. Only MG authorized
Malware Fighters can give directions on that issue.
For that you will need to go to the READ AND RUN ME and follow the steps required.
Then start a new thread in the Malware Forum

You need to get familiar with what is Anti-Virus and what is Anti-Spyware.
Counter Spy is Anti-Spyware not Anti-Virus.
Go Here for good free protection on both.

Feel free to ask more if needed. But your system being clean and safe can not be determined as easily as we all wish.

More than likely a false positive! You probably use a Sagem Modem (you would see it in Add/Remove programs as something like: SAGEM F@st 800-840 ). But we will know exactly what is going on if you follow the instructions evilfantasy gave to you and post in the Malware Forum.
