I recently purchased a Gateway notebook from Best Buy running Vista and have had nothing but problems with IE since pretty much week 2. The browser takes FOREVER to open and close, often jamming up other programs, or even the entire system. Hence, I've been using Firefox, which is fine, but I'd like to figure out what's wrong...and I use Windows Live Messenger, which automatically defaults to IE. :banghead

I understand that there is no way to uninstall IE7 from Vista (that I know of) and I can't seem to locate a CD.

Can anyone help? This site has been my savior in the past!!!

    THANK YOU!

As a Vista customer myself, believe me, I can sympathize with where you're coming from. I've had a headache or two from the OS, but it has the virtue of being the most repairable edition of Windows to date.

Internet Explorer can slow down for a variety of reasons, some of which are fairly benign. I have two suggestions for you to try:

    1. Temporary Internet Files: Slowdown in IE7 is almost always caused by a clutter of cookies, temporary internet files, history, and SSL state files. In Control Panel, open Internet Options. In the General tab, choose browsing history, and delete files, cookies, and history. Exit the delete window, then go to the Content tab and choose Clear SSL state. Then try loading IE7.

    2. Add-Ons: The other main cause of pain in any version of IE is add-ons. Usually third party add-ons are at fault from being incompatible, or malicious. To test to see if you're having issue here, go to Start and type 'Internet' in the Start Search bar. You should see an option for Internet Explorer without add-ons. If it runs normally here, go to Internet Options immediately, enter the Programs tab, and open Manage Add-Ons. Disable all add-ons one by one, then re-enable the first one from the top. Close IE, and re-run it normally. If IE still works after that, re-enable the next one until it starts to misbehave again. When you isolate the cause(s), disable them and leave them disabled. You can delete or uninstall them as appropriate.

Clearing the add-ons seemed to help in a very small way :) but IE7 is still running at such a slow speed, it's pretty much impossible to use...guess I'll stick to Mozilla for now.

    Thanks for the suggestions, despite.

If you are directly connected to the internet, say through DSL or cable and dont require any software authentication, try SafeMode w/ Networking and see if IE is slow there.

Wireless typically doesnt work in this mode, by the way.

Aslo as the Phishing filter in IE can slow surfing a touch, turn that off to test your surfing speeds, if much quicker keep it off, but do take care with the likes of banking, ebay, paypal and their web addresses.

In this age of malware, sometimes we can inadvertantly install two live resident scanning security applications, this can also have the effect of slowing applications and surfing down, so please list all your security software thats currently installed.

Just out of curiousity, how much RAM came with your new Gateway?
Vista operates best on a mimimum of 1 gig. How much FREE ram, do you have after Vista starts up, and all processes / programs are up and running?
