Actually there can be numerous completely different causes for an overall or general "slowdown" of your computer. We'll need WAY more information than you have provided within your posting here in order to diagnose whatever problem your having and then offer workable solutions. For example:

When you say "computer is slow" be more specific:

==Is it slow to boot? If so how long does it take to boot?
==Is it slow when opening programs? If so how long does it take?
==Is it slow connecting to the Internet? If so how long does it take?

Does the slowness "come and go" or is it slow all the time?
Has it always been this way? If not, when exactly did you first notice the slowness?
What operating system are you running? How much RAM (memory) do you have installed?

How many programs (and services) do you have running at "start up" meaning boot? To see a list of your autoloading apps, select Start, Run, type msconfig, press Enter, and click Startup. Windows 2000 lacks the msconfig program, but users of that OS and earlier OS's can download Mike Lin's free Startup Control Panel utility.

Deeper, more complex and serious harder-to-detect issues can dramatically slow your computer's performance too. You may have a virus, trojan, adware or need to troubleshoot problems by clean booting.

Finally, you might try following the steps [Offsite link for malware removal removed - unnecessary and we have a malware removal forum here ]

    Good Luck!

Why doesn't anyone ever try SafeMode first?

Disable first, ask questions later mentality, I guess.

Why don't try uinstalling gamemaker and see if that gets you back to where you were? I think I'd run CCleaner again after uninstalling it.

but dont u think he should run ccleaner in safe mode that might help and not require gamemaker being deleted

i already uninstalled gamemaker it made it faster but not back to normal also my internt connection sometimes is very fast sometimes it goes very slow and sometimes my downloads go at 1.5 mbs and times 100 to 150 kbs why?

it can just be the bandwith from where your downloading from all sites are different like most sites i download from i download at 500 kb's but not all

    so thats probally why

If you use Cable internet a lot of people connected at once in your local area will slow you down.

  11. Add|ct

You can only download as fast as the websites hosting download site will allow(how much bandwidth is set aside for the server you are accessing the files)

    Test your speed at http://speakeasy.net/speedtest

    WALLA!!!

Try the server nearest you then further away. See the speed difference? If the download sites you are accessing are further away or are very popular, the speed will be slower.

    Accept it.

  12. Add|ct

    Add|ct Private E-2

What is the speed of your RAM? Low end DDR2? DDR? That makes a difference, not just the ammount.

What type of processor do you have? ETC.

    Start > Run > DXDIAG

Press save in the bottom right after you have ran tests. Open that file, where ever you saved it, copy all contents and paste here in a single post. Maybe updating drivers to your hardware would help?

Disk defragment any? Try turning off services. Do you use Wireless internet on this particular computer?

    No?

Control Panel > Administrative Options > Services > Find 'Wireless Zero...' First turn to manual, then stop, then disable service.

Because slow PC syndrome is rarely related to malware. If you look at some of the many threads in the Malware Forum where people have mentioned something about their PC being slow, you will notice that it is rarely due to malware. It is more frequently related to what is installed and running.

Could it be malware.....of course it could. With Vista and with UAC being propery enabled at all times, it is unlikely.

i'm not trying to contridict what chas is saying but either way running the programs given in the malware forum would still clear up some space also to make a lil faster

    Would it not

  26. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

No! Clearing up space is not the issue! And clearing up space is not a malware issue either.

nicksimec already ran thru the procedures in the malware forum recently and was complaining of a slow PC. It was not malware and more than likely still is not. It is more than likely what is being run! As you will see in the thread in the malware forum ( http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=133379 ) all non-malware items were being mentioned.

Want to see better performance dump Symantec and all of its baggage!
Also remove other unnecessary items like the UniBlue software and other things already mentioned.

See the thread I linked and you will see that is what was basically being done. The main problem is still quite possibly Symantec. I'm sure there are a few other unnecessary items that probably have come back too(like an unnecessary running of Sun Java autoupdate)

  29. Add|ct

    Add|ct Private E-2

Symantec? Well, sheesh thats the issue right there. That thing is like a worm in of itself w/ the amount of system resources it takes with its 7 or 8 services running in the background 24/7.

Definitely go through the steps to remove all Norton/Symantec products. Symantec's website has the removal tool as well if he doesn't know how to do it himself.

Remove all Symantec's garbage, do a Ccleaner, then install a couple of good free programs; such as AVG free for Anti-Virus and ZoneAlarm 7.0 Free for his
    Firewall.

Those can be found on the Anti-Virus and Firewall download sections of the websites home page, respectively. :)

I would recommend downloading the replacement programs first, then doing these installs while offline.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet. (too much to read, sorry:eek:) But have you troubleshooted your cable modem? You said you have cable internet. This once happened to me with a new cable modem. I had just recently downloaded a bunch of Linux ISOs, then all of sudden everything went slow. I troubleshooted everything and I could only conclude one thing (Ambit cable modem) that was causing the problem. I went and replaced it, everything was fine after that. :)

Run this: Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

Then take a look thru a HijackThis log yourself. Do you see anything in the log mentioning Symantec or Norton or also LiveUpdate?

Does this have anything to do with the topic of this thread? Reboot. Is it still a problem? If so uninstall it, reboot and reinstall it. If it remains a problem, start a thread for only it.

So shut it down and then uninstall it. Use Task Manager (if necessary) to kill the process.

I have no idea what you mean! Do you mean you have lost certain startups? We have no reference point to compare anything to. Also that screen shot is barely legible!

Again you are going off topic? This thread was started to dicuss your computer being slow. If that problem has been resolved, you should post threads for other issues that you may be having but you need to focus on one problem at a time and not jump around.
