    Greetings!

would someone be so kind to check on my malware skirmish logs :wave

I went through 'read n' run me first' in detail, and here are my results

I should note that I haven't been able to run the spybot, and online scanning in safe mode..

system restore was off all the time through the removal of the pest, and startup set to normal.

    lil' background;

few days ago I was using Mozilla, when one IE poped up out of nowhere.

I found some strange process with hijack this, wich googled me to some virtumonde problems forums. I tried to replicate the steps from the personalized advice regarding the similar problem, downloaded whole bunch of lil' tools (vundofix, killbox, avenger, spybot etc.) Tried with avast home edition too, but with relative succes. With the combination of all these tools, I menaged to clean my system, but after a few hours online, without even the extensive surfing, the infestation ressurected :(

    Almost went mad..

now I followed your precise steps from 'read & run..' thread and I'm desperate for a closure :cry

    Thank You !

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

    Attach new logs for:
    ShowNew
    GetRun
    HJT

You didn't tell me how things are running......:)

Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including Counterspy).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    lightning fast ! ;)

although, It wasn't that bad before the purge either.. :confused

maybe my obsession with registry cleaning, and disk (de)fragmentation helped a bit..

I'm running Athlon 3700+ San Diego
with 1 GB OCZ DDR at 533
    upon WD Raptor

it runs so beautifully now, that I'll be sorry to part with it for Xmas :cry

Ok, now I'm off to part with lil' helpers, and meticulously study the 'How to protect yourself..' thread !

I'm considering buying one of those malware removal tools, and I was thinking of PrevX !? but now that Counterspy seems also reasonable ?!?
What do you think ? :major

in the end, I'd like to thank you from the bottom of my soul, because this, what you guys are doin' defies the logic of the 'modern way' where selfish interest and cold profit are the only measures of life and it's quality.
and I hope my gratitude will at least for a moment remind you all, how your altruism n' geeky humanism, place you far above n' beyond this society and all of it's puny idols.

    Cheers ! :wine

You're more than welcome .....you should look over these, as I don't run anything that is paid for:
    Top Freeware Picks. :)

    makes sense :p

right now I'm running avast home + komodo + spywareblaster, but I don't like the fact that avast on-access scanner loads with every boot, and I can not turn it off (unless stopping it is the same as turning it completely off?), when I'm not in the high risk environment. There is also a subtle change in agility of my rig now when everything's up and runnin'. I'd like to have an option to turn everything off to free some of the sys resources if necessary. Is that possible with avast onboard ?

    any hints pls:confused

    thx!

Try uninstalling Avast and trying AVG Anti-virus freeware ....see if that helps. I have tried Avast and did not like the way it ran on my system ....many here like it, but it is a personal thing.
