    Operating System: Windows Vista Basic
Problem Application: uTorrent 1.7.4 (supposedly Full Vista Compatible)
    Main Problem(s): Port not open
Port(s) in question: 38005, and pretty much any other port that uTorrent randomly picks or that I manually pick. There all not responding!
Additional Problem(s): "Error: Access is Denied" on Torrents (possibly a result of the main problem?)

I cannot for the love of everything holy figure out why the port for uTorrent is closed. OK, I should probably start out with my physical setup. I have a Verizon DSL modem now it itself is connected directly into the phone jack which goes to the back of the modem directly no filters. I have a Ethernet cable that goes to the NIC card with no node in between the computer and modem. I have a software firewall (Zone Alarm) and my modem has a firewall built into it's firmware (it's part of the modem's internals).

Here's the odd part I have a basic understand of ports and if I remember correctly certain ports are used in order to get to the internet and receive mail and so forth. I don't know if this helps but I have full internet access. I can download files, surf and open stuff on YouTube and similar sites, and I can receive and send mail with Yahoo and Gmail with no problems all of my internet activities are unaffected. I can also download updates for all my anti virus and anti spyware programs and again I have no problem doing so. I find it odd that uTorrent is the only program so far that suffers.

Now I can load the torrent into uTorrent but when it went to start the torrent it download about the first MegaByte or so and then terminated the Torrent with the "Error: Access is Denied" showing in the status tab. Now towards the bottom of the screen in a small little box on the lower interface a red stop sign when I moused over it it said "Not Connectible there appears to be a problem with your network connection." So I went to Options->Speed Test and decided to check the port I was using the program had picked 38005 when I first started it and so I figured to stick with it. The test came back simply telling me that there was a error which didn't help me much.

I was confused I have full access to the internet, can update my anti malware programs, and yet I couldn't download Torrents?! So I decided to go to another website to see if I could get a reason why the port wasn't open or responding. So I went to another website and had it run a check on port 38005 it came back that it wasn't responding reason: Connection timed out. So I tried to port forward via the modem's native Verizon software by typing 192.168.1.1 I'm not even sure if I got it right as the setup is very confusing.

So I tried to DMZ the host. All that achieved was a new virtual IP address and eventually later on last night I had to spend 5 mins and reinstall the Verizon software which was nice and all but it still didn't help my problem, the browser wouldn't let me onto the internet till I had reinstalled something probably was corrupted I don't see how considering the only thing I fooled with was trying to open uTorrent's port and clicking the DMZ Host button to enable it but meh, in any case I am back to where I started I don't know where to start in order to troubleshoot the problem I had this problem a few years ago with Dungeon Siege on Windows 98, I think it was Windows 98, and ironically I think the ISP was Verizon however that was relatively easy to fix.

Have you set up the ports that uTorrent is using in your firewall?
Also there are some guides here, if you haven't tried that already. http://portforward.com/guides.htm

To be 100% honest, I ddin't read your entire post  But I think that the above advice is solid. I'm a user of uTorrent also, and had all kinds of problems 'til I went to www.portforward.com and got the low-down for uTorrent and my router settings. Solid stuff at portforward....

Well see heres the problem I have a modem provided to me by Verizon. I don't have a external hardware router or firewall my modem is the firewall. I have a software firewall (Zone Alarm) but it has already cleared uTorrent to connect. Basically I can't pick from the list of routers and firewalls because I don't know which one my DSL modem uses if any from that list.

Yes! Thats exactly which model I have however I see a red Verizon screen with a completely different interface then the one they have pictured. However some of the dialog boxes look similar to the ones I see. Matter of fact I decided to attach a picture of the first screen I see so that you could see what I'm talking about I'll try again by the way what type of port does uTorrent use? TCP or UDP?

    Hi,

First try the portforward utorrent page. http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Westell/Westell6100/Utorrent.htm

Now before you go through all the instructions open a newbrowser window or tab and paste http://192.168.1.1/ into the address bar. Do you get a page that looks like the portforward picture about halfway down in the instructions? If so then the rest of the instructions on that page should work. For my Verizon account the username was my primary email name and password.

    TCP is fine for uttorent.

No, didn't work. I just tried it I forwarded the ports and I followed the directions but to no avail. I even tried to DMZ my host but that didn't work both of which I just tried getting ready to turn off DMZ mode.

What did the page look like when you entered the http://192.168.1.1/ address? Did you get the Verizon page or a Westell page? The Westell page is really the key to forwarding.

I've been thinking about this and since you can't get any connection in utorrent, I believe it may be a firewall problem. It has been quite a while since I first portforwarded but I am wondering if the default setting for your modem/router's firewall is too high? I don't remember if I had to change any initial settings but my modem/router firewall page looks like the picture below. If I set it to high then utorrent shuts down.

If you can't get a Westell page to appear, it looks like your Verizon page has a Firewall setting as well.

It's a Verizon page and it's firewall is off by default. It also has a custom setting, low, medium, and high.

EDIT: But something strange happened last night when I DMZed the host it gave me a external IP thats different to my internal (local) IP and now I can't change it back. So now I can't tell whether by forwarding the port if I fixed the problem because it checks via the external IP.

I just discovered something just now I tried to unzip a file directly into the uTorrent main folder and winzip kicked back a access denied error. Could this be the cause for my port being closed because along with that my torrents are complaining about a "Error: Access is Denied" in the status tab. How do I keep Vista from resetting the folder attributes? I change it from read only and vista changes it back again after closing the dialog box.

I don't have Vista so I can't help you with file permissions but it certainly sounds like that could be a problem.

It appears that Verizon changed the look of their router software recently. This thread is recent(but unrelated to your problem) and shows your layout http://www.broadbandreports.com/for...stell-6100-new-look-settings-for-Linksys-blue

I'm going to look around for newer forwarding instructions that may work with the newer page.

Have you gotten any torrent software to work at all, even slowly? One thing you could try as a test is BitComet. It is very good at installing itself and doesn't ask about forwarding. I wonder if it would be able to complete a small torrent? As a note BitComet is frowned upon by many torrent sites because it does not share properly. If you'd rather wait and figure out utorrent it is probably just as well.

:confused You said ZA has cleared uTorrent but have you physically entered the ports uTorrent is using into ZA?

Sorry, I don't have any specifics to help. I realize port forwarding is confusing enough without the user interface complications.

I found this rather long post that towards the middle has a few tips that might give you some clues as to which tabs to look under. The interface is still different than yours but has many similarities. Perhaps the Security tab mentioned in the thread is similar to your firewall tab? http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r18688576-Verizon-Westell-327W-HELP

Also note that ZA is also mentioned in the thread so Musksnipe may be pointing you in the right direction.

ZA already cleared the program (when I first ran uTorrent it asked me for permission for it to connect to the internet i said yes after clicking the remember answer box)

I physically setup uTorrent via my modem's port forwarding menu.

I was fooling around with some more of the firewall settings I still can't get uTorrent to work (sheds a tear of sorrow) however! I started up BitComet it still told me port was blocked so then I enabled something called Static NAT in my Verizon Firewall settings. I tried BitComet again and lo and behold the port indicator light turnt green! I haven't tested it out yet but hopefully it solves my next problem.

EDIT: Well so far so good. Going almost 10 mins without incident now. Usually it gives out after the first minute and a half. I think we good to go now.

I'm not familiar with how ZA operates, as I use Sygate but when I first ran uTorrent, I was asked by the FW if it had permission to run. I clicked "yes"Then before I was able to actually get my ports ''allowed'' access to the internet, they had to be manually designated within the FW. It's worth looking at the advanced section of your exceptions to see what port has been allowed for uTorrent.

I've read similar. I think this is good advice. Make sure ZA is allowing your forwarded port as well as the modem's firewall.

Glad BitComet is working for you. :) I used BitComet for several months and was happy with it, I only explored Utorrent and Forwarding because a private site I like really hates Bitcomet, so I switched to get along.

I had the portfowarding blues too:cry. after searching and studying and kinna still confused :confused i decided not to change anything with portfowarding at all...
    here is what happened
got accessact dsl and for some reason utorrent would not load .only got red bar and tracker stat.-hostname not found
DHT stat- not allowed then tried to update and said unable to contact utorrent update server.
and from there , two days go by with me looking all the stuff up check my port its closed told to go to portfowarding and learn all that!:confused

so this is how i got it fixed. did no port messing. for the heck of it went to windows firewall and made sure it was off (for me only! have norton and it conflicked with my winxp firewall ) then went to my norton icon in the tray at bottom of desk top double clicked on it . under systems status find personal firewall clicked it then clicked configure.new screen comes up then clicked programs looked down and found manual programs then scroll down until i found utorrent looked at internet connection and it was on BLOCK ALL!I changed it to permit all closed out of that and closed out of norton looked at utorrent and GLORIEEEEE BEEEE it was working just the way it was supposed to.
don't know how it got blocked because i did not do it!
right now i'm just glad the darn thing is happy with me:D
    hope it helps someone else.
