Changing the icon on the desktop

I'm not sure, but it seems I've lost the ability to change an icon in XP, whereas it was a snap in Win98. In Win98 I right clicked on the icon in question and used properties, but there doesn't seem to be anything equivelent in XP. Any suggestions?

 

What did you want to change the SIZE or the icon himself ???

I just check with XP and you click properties and it is there.....

I have XP pro SP2

 

Really, where is it? Here is my screen...

Note: I didn't say anything about size, I want to change the icon.

 

Subscribing to thread... Have been curious about this for a while. Some of my icons I can change via properties, and some look like your screenshot Bill_M.

It looks like this might work if that's a .BAS file type, worked for me on a .txt icon.

A technique I've used to get around this, is to create a short-cut to the Desktop icon. If you right-click on the icon, it should present you with the option to create a shortcut. I know it sounds weird. However, the newly created shortcut will not be bound by any internal "context" gobble-dee-gook and so you should be able to change the name, starting folder path, and icon to your heart's content. This technique works with any "special" icons that are context burdened , such as "Internet Explorer" "Word for Windows" etc.

OK, so I have the program on the desktop, and I want to have a shortcut. Desktops have confused me a little, this isn't the first time I've bumped against them.

@BCGray, are you trying to change the size, or the actual icon? It looks like you're changing the size. This one I had down early, since both my aging parents wanted it BIG!
