Uninstall Bearshare, Kazaa, and anything for WildTangent.

Also download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
[*]It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
[*]Run HostsXpert.exe, click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
[*]Click the X to exit the program

I'm going to post two sets of instructions below. Each will be enclosed in separate Quote boxes. Make sure to complete the first one 100% before moving on to the second one.

ATTACH THE FIRST LOG NOW BEFORE CONTINUING OR YOU WILL OVERWRITE IT!!!! And then immediately continue on to the below steps.

    How are things working now?

You are not following the instructions already given in message # 2.

Yes I realize that you now appear to be running the READ & RUN ME, but that should have been run before first posting and I have given you steps to remove part of your infection in message # 2.

    sorry, guess i got confused.
i'll just follow your instructions in message 2 now.
    attaching first smitfraudfix scan.
now i have to reboot in safe mode and do the second smitfraudfix instruction, right?
it will take awhile b/c everything is so slow.

SmitFraudFix runs very quickly compared to the online scans you have already run. After attaching the second rapport.txt file, you may as well just attach the other logs from the READ ME:

    - GetRunKey
    - ShowNew
    - and a new HJT log

All 3 of these run very fast too.

  7. lhstrunk

    lhstrunk Private E-2

here is the second smitfraud attachment as per your instructions in message 2.
things are much better but i still got a pop up from
"securepccleaner" which takes me to the following website when i try to close it.
    http://securepccleaner.com/privacy/...33b04035651510e5456050514110b0d00534208430b50
i so appreciate all your help and apologize for doing things out of order. it must frustrate you all.
thanks again for everything and i look forward to any further instructions.

oops, i think our posts crossed in the ether.
    attaching
    runkeys.txt
    newfiles.txt
i'm going to reread the HJT instructions and will attach in a separate post.
    THANK YOU SO MUCH.

You skipped or did not do all of step 2 of the READ ME. Do it now.

Also before getting the HijackThis log see step 0 of the READ ME. You did not put your system into normal startup mode. You are using MSconfig to control startups. As such you need to disable this and then you will need to attach new logs from GetRunKey and HijackThis. So if our posts crossed and you already attached the HJT log. You need to get a new one after putting your system in normal startup mode.

I just noticed that you did not follow the instructions for running GetRunKey and ShowNew. You must follow those directions so that they will run properly. You did not extract the files from the ZIP file to run them or you got one of the error messages mentioned on the download page and you need to correct them. Thus you need to attach new logs from both GetRunKey and ShowNew after properly running them.

  11. lhstrunk

    lhstrunk Private E-2

i did unzip and run them but i don't remember getting error messages. anyway i'll try those two again.
i'm assuming i should hold off running hijack this until i do those two things and they work properly.
i did go into view files and checked/unchecked per step 2 and i did run msconfig and checked normal startup per step 0
    of Read and Run Me.

  12. lhstrunk

    lhstrunk Private E-2

i ran getrunkey and got an error message, followed the fix instructions and ran again.
i ran shownew - no error messages.
    attached the logs.
    hijack this coming next post.

    You're welcome.

Why are all those lines for winmx.com in your hosts file? Do you really need these for some reason? We normally remove all these from the hosts file.

I'm working up a fix now but would like to know if you really need those before I remove them.

Also are you using a proxy?
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,AutoConfigURL = http://localhost:9100/proxy.pac

  16. lhstrunk

    lhstrunk Private E-2

i was wondering that myself. i used winmx years ago to download music, i think. i haven't used it in many years and didn't even know it was still there. to my knowledge i have no need for any winmx entries.

i don't THINK i use a proxy but how would i be able to find out for sure? i use AT&T DSL and a 2wire modem/router combo, if that tells you anything.

    lhstrunk Private E-2

i use firefox and checked under tools/options/advanced/network/connections/settings
it says "direct connection to the internet"
does that answer the proxy question?

    We'll fix it.

Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
[*]It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
[*]Run HostsXpert.exe, click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
[*]Click the X to exit the program
It is probably part of the Google Accelerator you have installed.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
