I installed uTorrent and the download speeds I get are painfully slow (~4 kB/s)- I've tried to download various different items fro different sources, and focussed on those with a lareger number of seeds than leeches.

Also the port test on the uTorrent Speed Guide menu fails with:-

Welcome to the µTorrent Port Checker.
A test will be performed on your computer to check if the specified port is opened.

    Checking port 18107 on 84.203.216.35...

Error! Port 18107 does not appear to be open

I have followed the instrucitons on portforward.com to ensure that the relevant port is forwarded on my router (Linksys WRT54G v5) but still no improvement.

I have Windows Vista with the firewall on (but uTorrent is listed as an exception). My main PC is on a static IP address, but the rest of the network is DHCP

ANyone got any ideas on what I shoudl try next?

My personal opinion is that uTorrent is a wast of hard drive i use Flash get it's much faster you can download it from this site at

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download461.html

but regarding P2P i don't think you will have a lot of success here.

for tech questions it's the best so welcome

if this is the last version u're talking about ( 'till now 1.7.5), i had the same problem when upgrading to it, i solve that by changing the port number in µtorrent conection options.
i'm not using Router but only firewall. Hope u'll solve that

I chnaged the port forwarding according to their instructions. This worked perfectly but the first things I downloaded gave me a heavy virus infection, mostly virtumonde.

    Be careful

High speeds with uTorrent are the result of proper port forwarding. Visit www.portforward.com for info. I use uTorrent frequently and had dismal speeds until I visited portforward, searched for my router on their web site, and configured it as specified. I now regularly get downloads in excess of 300k, and many times over 500k....

I followed their instructions (http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54G/Utorrent.htm) exactly for my router, but still same effect

TOMBROWN,, first let me say from fact, any version of UTORRENT above 1.6.2 is being monitored not only by the government, but also by your ISP, and most likely your ISP is throttling your downloads, There are sites that you can get the older version of utorrent, Utorrent 1.7.0 and above have been banned from many tracker sites for security reasons. You can find a link for Utorrent 1.6.1 in the forums of Araditracker.com, A private tracker of very high standards and Quality. Hope this helps many of you out. You will have to join the tracker, but it is a free site, contains no ad ware and as a member of two plus years, the site has never had a corrupt or virused file, this is mainly due to high standards, a great moderator team and the standards that the chosen uploaders have brought to the site. please check it out

    Thanks for all your input

However I think I have found the problem, I got the following email from my SP yesterday:

    Hi Tom

Unfortunately BitTorrent is blocked on our network as it causes disruption to other users and this would fall under our fair usage policy .

    Regards

Unfortunately, as I live in the back of beyond in Ireland, this is the only service available to me for the moment ... :(
