hey guys, im considering mechanical engineering as my new major since CIS is...well, it's not for me lol. Waaaay too computery, incredibly boring...ugh, i hate it haha. Does anyone have experience in a mech. engineering major or aerospace engineering? actually, just engineering in general lol. Im transferring to San Jose state next year (currently at humboldt state) and want to find something that i would find interesting.

    Go for it!

I have a basic maritime engineering certificate, I can operate the engines on ships with up to 2x500 hp, which is generally enough on the ships where I've been employed. I'm 38 years old now, and a little too old to start a new 4 year education, but if I'd known what I know now when I was your age, I would have studied to become an engineer. You will be guaranteed a well paid job for the rest of your life, and your experience and education will come in handy for jobs with a very wide range and you will have options to work in any part of the world! :)

Today, most of the monitoring is computerized though, and most diagnostic tools are also computerized. So you won't get away from puters completely! ;)

A Mechanical Engineering degree, will keep you employed, but an Electrical Engineering degree, will do that, plus you'll get a large portion of the glory, most of the money, and plenty of attention from the ladies.....:)

Great Advice Solange, as one who was fortunate/Lucky enough to have supportive parents and teachers, I was able to pick up a few degrees plus someone threw in a doctorate along the way somewhere. Engineering can be a rewarding career, but be careful in what area you lean towards. Most Engineers spend almost there entire lives behind a computer at a desk doing very mundane tasks(for me anyways). This plus the fact that the almighty computer and the Horde of Third World Engineers wanting to come to North America is quickly reducing the need for that type of Engineer.

So my advice is to look to the future, and determine what the Futures needs are where you want to both live and work, and what you want to do with your life. Yea I know, when I was your age I didn't have a clue what I wanted either, thats were if your fortunate enough you will have people around you that can help and guide you.

If you want excitement and hands on experience you can't go wrong with training to be a Site Engineer, this offers travel, meeting different people, plus it gets you "Out and About". This is what I did for about ten years of my life, and then I established my own consulting business, and was again fortunate enough to be able to sell the business and retire at the young age of 45.

Like I told all my kids, and any kids that ask me. Since about Grade Eight you are writing your own "Book of Life", be careful and write that "Book" well, for it will follow you for the rest of your life. Others will judge you by what you have written, and there are very few "Do Overs" Hope that helps you Viper

Unless you decide to come to the UK, where an engineer means nothing :(
