    Hi all :)

Just before going to my bed :tired , there is an inbuilt safety check that I must perform on all the appliances, doors and windows in our house :)
    Check car doors/windows are locked.
    Check garage is secure.
Check the front door lock, putting the keys out of reach of any potential thief who may try to reach them through the letterbox.
Check the back door lock, same as above with keys.
Open blinds to make sure kitchen window is locked.
Check Gas hobs on oven to make sure there they are off and we cannot be gassed in our sleep. :(
All windows and doors in our living room check they are locked.
Make sure that TV has been unplugged from wall.
Make sure that the rubbish (garbage) has been emptied from kitchen bucket.
Stairgate at top of stairs is secure in event our wee daughter miraculously escapes from her cot :)

Check all windows up the stairs and finally make sure that the PC, speakers and printer are off.

Every single night,I find that I have to perform this ritual :) If for any reason I cannot do the checks, :)drink :wine) then I have to rely on my wife securing the house! I find myself getting up in the middle of the night to double check everything just in case!

Does anyone else find themselves doing this? Or is just me suffering from some sort of Obsessive Compulsive Thingy!!

Living in a flat, my perspective is a little different. But...

I tend to leave the balcony door open when I go to work (in the summer time) so that the cat can go out there at least.

I usually try to remember to lock the door when I'm home, but I have been known to forget.

Telly is usually turned off at night, and usually puter as well, exceptions, especially regarding puter, does occur.

Stove is usually turned off when I'm not cooking. I have forgotten it on, but not very often.

I tend to forget my mobile as often as I remember to take it to work.

I really try to remember to take my keys with me, makes life simpler!

That you unplug the TV, but not the computer.

At my house, the TV plugs into a strip with VCR, DVD, and the cable box. There aren’t many things that have their own plug, and don’t share.

Quick pinch of my arm to see if I alive is all I need :)

But all of the above work apart from checking the gas as I no have gas stoves/hobs, but I do have OCD on checking doors that are locked!

You can buy rubber (pizza shaped) wedges that you can slide under the door to stop it rattling, then no need to keep it screwed shut.

A good idea to take a couple of these wedges if you are travelling to stop unwelcome motel or hotel guest from barging in while you "in residence". Bazza

If you wake at night to double check yes you have a problem if you do it before going to bed i don't see a problem.....

    Nope.

Windows are partially opened and always locked in position. Plus have security screens on windows and doors which are always locked whether or not I'm home so air flow allowed. When I finish with anything, it gets turned off or locked up or put away immediately. The only thing I check is that the back door is closed and locked and brush my teeth. :D

Try doing things with a double check immediately upon completion of use and you won't have to go through that tiresome regime matey;)

hmm for us all we got to do is look out the window make sure the cars is still there make sure the cat and dog is inside lock the front, back and side doors and then shut off the lights then go to bed lol

its so nice out here all you got to worry about is wild animals heck even our window ac units just hang in the windows if someone wanted to they could just go onto the side porch and lift my window take the ac out and walk on in lol but around here its not really wise to break in you never know if someone will be waiting for you with a gut buster or a high powered rifle or a nice 38.cal hand gun. ;) or have a vary big dog waiting very quietly at the window or door but if we go anywhere for longer then a day then we lock the house tight and hide the most valued stuff.

We have gun laws here...so what you do is out of the question. Regardless of where anyone lives here, it is unwise to be slack with home security...at the very least, it would void any insurance claim.

In the old days, people used to leave the front door open with the key in the lock! And that was around the CBD area! Even people in rural areas take security precautions now. Guess it is a sign of the times *sigh*

Me...I make sure I have my book, which I must read before going to bed even if I've been up drinking all night, and I'm good to go.:) I don't turn things off or unplug anything. The lights get turned off only because it could disrupt my sleep. :D

That's exactly why I turn fans and lights off. Either the noise or brightness wakes me, especially now we have large patio doors in our bedroom and no drapes (by choice).

It's a good thing to have a safety check especially with children.

Me, I'm compulsive about turning things off that are not in use and locking doors all through the day.

The only time I lock my doors is when I'm going out, mainly to deter kids. As to checking other things, I don't bother. I turn them off as I go.

All that other stuff get's done hours before.

This is something I think Canadians and most Scandinavians have in common, we are far more relaxed about our homes than Americans and Brits. I was always surprised when visiting a friend who lived in a small town in northern England. She wouldn't leave the house if a top floor inaccessible window was locked ajar, even for a 5 minute shopping trip. I never understood the fear, I don't think being paranoid about locking will help, if someone wants to get in, they will, locked or not.

Yep, on most of the stuff mentioned previously. In addition:- Dead-bolts on doors/windows; perimeter fence secured; cars locked away; alarm system active. C.C.T.V.'s operation check ... but most importantly, when kids are staying over *Make sure toilet/s have been flushed!! ~ As I HATE 'Mr. Hanky', stanky smells in the morning! http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g309/Zobor/wc.gif

I usually don't bother with locking the doors, even though I live on the edge of town. Between my dog, baseball bat, and shotgun I feel I'm a match for any idiot that thinks they're going to get a quick buck.
Locks only slow down a determined thief and I have always been curious about how big a hole, double-ought buckshot makes from less then 10 feet away. :D

    • Check all lights
    • Back door to garage
    • See if cats want to be in or out
    • lock doors most nights
    • Brush teeth (none of you guys?:neener)

  23. Burning_Monkey

    Burning_Monkey MajorGeek

I brush my teeth, check the weather, and set the alarm clocks. That is pretty much it. My home computer stays on 24/7 for various reasons and everything else in the house is shut off as I finish using it or not.

Most of the time my doors aren't even shut much less locked.

I just put my teeth in my tooth holder and drop in a cleaning tab :) People around here even leave keys in the cars. Funny enough 2/3 of people here are on the sherriff's department or police department (it helps) :p

I tend to be a bit obsessive when it comes to things like locking doors and windows, etc. when we leave. For that matter I firmly believe doors should be secured even when you are home - it just makes sense to me.

It took me almost 6 years to finally break my wife's habit of coming home and dutifully locking the door behind her, but leaving her keys in the door lock outside . . . rolleyes . ( . . and she is the smartest person I have ever known . . .)

I also obsess when it comes to leaving coffee pots or stoves on.

  29. Burning_Monkey

I have to remind myself to take the keys out of my vehicle. Normally I just pull them out of the ignition and drop them into the cup holder or some such like that.

In Texas not only do we own guns, but if you shoot and kill a home invader inside your house you can not be prosecuted. It gets a bit more complicated if he survives and runs away. We're not the only state with that law either. So... intruders will be shot, survivors will be shot again. It does put burglary in a new light for the criminals. Other states have different laws, some with no common sense at all. I've heard a story about Massachusetts where a judge had to throw out a case because a apt. dweller refused to jump out a second or third story window to escape a burglar, but (as only exit was the front door) fought and killed him instead. Apparently he was (according to the district attorney) supposed to flee and risk death jumping instead. Different states, different laws. BTW, the above Texas law is nicknamed "Stand your ground" law.

Be that as it may, I also have several largish dogs, which do wonders. I've had a bit of bother getting my boy to lock the front door every time (steel door with knob lock and deadbolt), and the back door is my garage door w/ opener, but the only time I've been burglarized was before I got my cat loven, yard chasen, nose sniffen kids. The new dog wasn't too sure when my overstuffed siamese mix started rubbing and greeting her, but she has come to understand he's part of the family and now seems to like it. It is seriously funny watching my indoor only cat helping the dogs dry themselves from rain with that little thing he calls a tongue.

That's sad, Emma...there are sleezeballs that watch for obits in the papers and then look up the adresses of the survivors so that they can do just that.
I got robbed on the day before Christmas Eve about 10 years ago (by a friend?), while we are at mom-in-law's for a party. He also did his brother-in-law's ( a DOC officer) house. He got 4 years in prison. :celebrate
The sad thing was, my presents weren't under the tree yet, but the kids' and my wife's were.We spent Christmas Eve Day spending money we had already spent and replaced the stolen stuff. My wife ended up waiting two weeks before I could replace hers. :(
I have had a big dog ever since.

Ever hear Richard Prior's routine about a Doberman? You can get in easy, getting out is the trick. Dog wants to playyyy.

Most of these free lance socialists don't have a concience, and not too many brains either.

Does Britain allow shotguns? I seem to remember hearing something like that. Actually shotguns make excellent home protection weapons, as long as they are treated with respect. You don't have to aim well, they don't go through walls, and the loading sound they make is intimidating as hell.

  38. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

No no nooooooo...you cannot use shotguns to protect yourself....you cannot use any guns to protect yourself in the UK. With special shotgun licenses and permits you can have some types for grouse, rabbit hunting etc, but you also need a gaming license on top of that (I do not mean PS2 and Xbox gaming here guys...get a grip LOL)

But I'm sure you wouldn't know about that. You're way too young. :p

And now back to the subject. I seem to remember reading somewhere that crime rates went down in Texas because so many citizens do have guns there. Is that true, Bill?

As an Ex smoker (2 years today actually) The one thing you should never do is empty ashtrays at the end of the day (there may be ones that are still alight). Put them in the kitchen or outside and leave them till tomorrow. If you must empty them at night then do it into a fireproof container.

BTW my last minute check is to make sure my whisky glass is empty :)

Truthfully I don't have a clue. This part of the country it is becoming more common, things like concealed gun licenses are pretty common across several states, including Texas and Oklahoma.
