When a loved one is about to have surgery, it is a stressful time for all pclover. Just keep the faith and be strong and be there for your Dad, for he will be worried and afraid as well, and if he feels that his family is concerned this will put an extra burden on him. So tell him you love him, and try keep your fear as much to yourself as you can. When he has recovered, sit down and tell him just how concerned you were prior to his surgery.

You can also talk to his doctor, who should take the time to help you with any of your concerns.

Here's hoping that tomorrow, you will be back here saying just how well he is doing.

    HI PC

i realize words are not enough but i hope i can give you some peace of mind in your stressful time.

back surgery is not as dangerous now, a few years ago it was a big risk but surgeons have progressed a long way in the last 10 years.

i have had 6 operations in less than 2 years to correct problems in my neck (twice) and my back (4 times) after an accident.

having spent a long time unable to walk i really had no option but to go ahead with it and now i am glad to say i am on the way to recovery, i may have to go back under the knife again (i will know Thursday when i see my surgeon) i hope for the last time.

it would be stupid of me to say there is no risk at all but life is a risk.

the technology now I.E lasers and computers make it a risk worth taking if it improves the quality of your dads life and gives him more mobility.

my operations were done with lasers and it allows the surgeon to be very precise with his scalpel.

the recovery period is long and painful but with painkillers it can be made bearable.

all i can say to you is be there and give your dad encouragement and support, it does not sound a lot but believe me to have your friends and family around you in a time of worry and pain does help a lot, to anyone who has never been in such a situation it will seem trivial but it helps with the mental recovery, don't forget that although i have tried to minimize the risk it is still a big trauma to have your spine opened and have people poking and prodding in there.

you and your dad will be in my thoughts and prayers and i hope his recovery is swift.

please let us know how he is after the op?

Any time our parents are having surgery or other medical problems, we worry. They are our pillars.
I will be thinking about you and your Dad today.
As others have said, medicine has come so far now, there is less risk.
Please let us know how he is doing.
    Take care

Sorry to hear that, pclover - but I'll restate what others have said here - medical technology has come light-years in the past few decades. It's remarkable what they can do now.

But knowing that doesn't help the worry, I know. I still hate it when my parents need something major like that - I can't help but be afraid for them, so I understand your feelings.

My thoughts and prayers for your dad and your family. Let us know how it goes

I hope your Dad starts feeling better soon, P.C.L. I too, am no stranger to back operations and pain, but yeah, Bill has suffered more than most in that area, for sure.

Hope you all feel less pain, and become more mobile, soon.

I managed to do my hip in again last week, but that's another story entirely, eh.

Hope the surgery goes well. Yes, it's scary, but if you have a good surgeon and trust them, then leave it in their hands. At least that's what I did for mine.

I am really glad all went well for your dad he will need a little time to adjust to the restrictions the surgery has made (no parachuting or wrestling for a while) but as time goes by he will recover and the neck surgery is not as painful and with all these friends at MGs rooting for him he should get better real soon.

Sound like the really hard part is over, now comes the medium hard part. I'm glad to hear everything went well, now the healing begins.

Back and neck surgery can be worrying, so glad things have worked out.

Now I expect he'll be going through rehab with ongoing physio...so this is where he'll really need support because he will be feeling at a bit of a loss until he slowly gets stronger.

He'll be fine...but exercising will test his patience:)
